U18 girls soccer kicks way to 2nd place at state

FAIRMONT — State runner-up.

The Saxton Family Partnership U18 girls soccer team of Fairmont captured second-place honors during the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association’s Classic 2 state championships last week in Coon Rapids.

Lexi Kaufman contributed to all of Fairmont’s goals during a first-round 4-1 victory over the North Metro Soccer Association last Wednesday.

Kaufman netted Saxton Family Partnership’s third goal off a pass from Emma Schultze. Kaufman also netted a playmaker by delivering assists on both of Rayah Quiring’s two net-finding kicks and a solo score by Brooklyn Meyer.

Goalkeeper Cadence Becker generated 22 saves to earn the win for Fairmont.

Kaufman helped engineer the offense and Becker anchored the defense to power Fairmont to a 3-0 quarterfinal triumph over North East United last Thursday in Coon Rapids.

Sami Lenort converted Ellie Schultze’s pass into Saxton Family Partnership’s initial goal before Kaufman cashed in back-to-back assists from Quiring for a pair of goals.

Becker turned away three North East United shots to pocket her second consecutive shutout between the pipes.

Becker chalked up eight stops to garner a third shutout in a row to help steer Fairmont to a 1-0 victory over White Bear Soccer Club in the state semifinals last Friday in Coon Rapids.

Sami Lenort produced the contest’s only goal off an assist from Carissa Saxton to pace Saxton Family Partnership’s triumph.

Despite Becker’s netminding skills, Fairmont lost a 2-0 decision to North Metro Soccer Association in the Classic 2 state championship clash last Saturday in Coon Rapids.

Becker recorded an incredible game-high 28 saves for Fairmont.

Saxton Family Partnership of Fairmont ended the season with a 14-3 overall record.

U15 Division

St. Anthony 1, Fairmont Associate Optometry 0 — Inclement weather limited the state tournament schedule, with St. Anthony squeezing out a 1-0 decision over Fairmont Associate Optometry on July 21 in Shakopee.

Goalkeeper Abby Cihoski recorded 15 saves for Fairmont, which closed the season with a 7-1-2 overall record.

U13 Division

Inver Grove Heights 2, Fairmont Car Parts Direct 0 — Inver Grove Heights edged Fairmont Car Parts Direct in limited state action July 21 in Shakopee.

Netminder Madi Stromberg tallied nine saves for Fairmont, which ended the season with an 8-3 overall record.
