Fairmont tracksters 7th at AA True Team state meet

STILLWATER — The Fairmont Cardinals boys track & field lineup placed seventh at the Class AA True Team State Meet in Stillwater on Saturday.

The Cardinals used one gold-medal finish, one silver and two bronzes to help build their team total of 397.5 points, but one of the bronzes might have been the most meaningful.

In the 1,600-meter run, Andrew Moeller finished third with a time of 4:32.01, less than a second behind Willmar’s Adnan Muhumed for second and only a second and a half behind Mankato East’s Jett Oachs for first.

Moeller said the 4:32.01 finish was the completion of a career goal.

“I really came to this meet with my main goal, my only goal, being to beat my dad’s mile time,” Andrew Moeller said in reference to Chad Moeller. “It’s been my goal for about 12 years now. With him being my biggest inspiration for racing, that was probably his most impressive race. To be able to beat that, I was smiling as I came across the finish line and I couldn’t stand afterwards. It meant a lot to me and there were definitely some tears afterwards. That’s what I came here to do and I got it done.”

Andrew Moeller beat his father’s personal-best mile time of 4:34. After crossing the finish line, Andrew Moeller fell to the turf in Pony Stadium and stayed for a few minutes before going up in the stands to share the celebratory moment with his parents. Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said that will likely be Andrew Moeller’s final mile of his high school career as he focuses on the 800-meter run and 4×400 in his final meets.

Along with the third-place finish, Moeller also took 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.89, while Dawson Gatewood crossed in 17th at 2:13.68.

Moeller also combined with Jordan Wolter, Hudson Artz and Dylan Kennedy for a third-place finish in the 4×400 relay.

The Cardinal 4×400 team ran in the first of two heats and won the heat with a time of 3:33.83, but had to watch as both Jordan (3:30.2) and Willmar (3:33.28) beat the time during the second heat.

Kennedy earned Fairmont’s lone silver medal in the open 400 with a time of 51.54, less than a second behind St. Croix Lutheran’s Asahi Kuroki at 50.96, while Artz finished seventh at 52.8, nearly stretching and falling past the finish line to beat Mankato West’s Johathan Sikel, but Sikel came out one-hundredth of a second ahead.

The Cardinals’ gold medal came from Hayden Berhow in the high jump. Berhow’s approach steps had to be adjusted because of the high jump area’s setup, forcing him to stutter his first step after starting on the football field. Berhow was the lone competitor to clear the bar at 6 feet even.

Bonk said many performances stood out at the meet.

“We kind of figured we’d be in that middle group and that’s where we were,” Bonk said. “There were a few performances that kind of stand out, Andrew Moeller’s mile, his dad was a great miler, he’s been going for that time for years and he got it. … He moved into our top 10 all time. Same would be true for Caden Baarts, a top 10 all time 200, a great personal best for him. Hayden Berhow winning the high jump, Dylan (Kennedy) and Hudson (Artz), two of the top few in the 400. I thought in the middle of the meet we picked up a lot.”

The Fairmont 4×800 relay team of Wolter, Gatewood, Connor Artner and Artz combined for fourth place with an incredible finish.

Through the first three legs, the Cardinal team stayed in sixth or seventh, with Artz taking the final handoff close behind the fourth- and fifth-place teams. Artz passed into fifth place during the final straightaway on his first lap, then turned on the jets to pass into fourth with 15 meters left in the race to finish with a time of 8:41.34, beating Pine Island’s 8:41.39.

Caden Baarts led the way for the Cardinals in the sprints, with a time of 11.62 for 10th in the 100 and running the fastest Fairmont time (22.76) in the 200-meter dash since Ryan Nelson’s 2002 time of 22.2. Baarts’ time earned him fourth.

Willmar collected its third consecutive Class AA state team title with a nine-point win over Jordan, while all four teams from Section 2 — Jordan, Mankato East, Mankato West and Fairmont — finished in the top 7 in the 12-team competition.

The Fairmont boys get in the starting blocks Thursday by hosting the Section 2A, Sub-Section 5 Meet at Bob Bonk Track.
