Fairmont tennis nets win over Redwood Valley
REDWOOD FALLS — The Fairmont Cardinals captured three of the four singles matches to help engineer a 5-2 Big South Conference boys tennis victory over the Redwood Valley Cardinals on Tuesday in Redwood Falls.
Thomas Klanderud coasted to back-to-back 6-0 set wins over Ari Shaw-Kerkhoff at fourth singles for Fairmont, while Blake Haugen nearly matched Klanderud’s performance via a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Brian Bucholz at third singles.
Ameya Komaragiri capped Fairmont’s singles victories by serving a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) loss to Ben Collins during No. 2 singles action.
Fairmont’s Jeb Green and Pete Ortega combined court skills at first doubles to generate a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cameron Sommers and Josiah Hultquist.
Stuart Smick and Jack Hagen synchronized their tennis skills at third doubles and produced a 6-3, 6-1 triumph for Fairmont.
Richard Wilkens defeated Fairmont’s Tyrell Zieske at first singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Redwood Valley’s Andrew Muetzel and Jacob Zollner rallied for a three-set win over Evan Carlson and Aaron Hendricks at No. 2 doubles. Carlson and Hendricks opened the match with a 6-4 win before Muetzel and Zollner forced a third set by claiming the second set, 7-5. Muetzel and Zollner netted the team point by defeating Carlson and Hendricks in a tiebreaker, 10-8.
Ian Fortune and Parker Vetter teamed up to post an 8-2 victory over Laten Good Thunder and Cole Johnson during an exhibition match.
Fairmont (5-7) plays host to Blue Earth Area at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cardinal Courts.
