8th-grade hoopsters go 2-2 at state

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals eighth-grade girls basketball team compiled a 2-2 record at the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services state tournament last weekend in Delano.

The Minneapolis Lakers edged Fairmont, 38-35, during opening-round action.

Abby Cihoski scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Cardinals, Olivia Ortega netted 12 points, while Kate Busche supplied five points and five rebounds.

Ortega produced 19 points to guide Fairmont to a 45-32 second-round victory over Spring Lake Park, while Cihoski netted nine points.

Kate Busche contributed eight points and eight rebounds to the Cardinals’ winning ways, while Jazlyn Geerdes pulled down nine rebounds.

Ortega collected 13 points to engineer a 33-26 third-round triumph over Inver Grove Heights, while Cihoski contributed nine points and six rebounds.

Ortega supplied six points, Anna Ehlert chipped in five points and five rebounds, while Kate Busche garnered five boards.

Buffalo Purple defeated Fairmont, 24-14, during fourth-round state action to end the Cardinals’ season.

Cihoski scored seven points for the Cardinals, Jazlyn Geerdes tallied four points, while Kate Busche grabbed five rebounds.
