Bucs, Jaguars hoopsters each fall in final seconds

WELLS — Nolan Magnuson drained a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to propel the United South Central Rebels to a 59-58 victory over the Blue Earth Area Bucs during nonconference basketball action Monday night in Wells.

AJ Kloos netted a game-best 21 points for the Rebels, who rallied from a 26-24 halftime deficit to squeeze by the Bucs. Sam Zebro and Colby Klocek contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively, to the comeback win.

Carter Bell connected for 15 points to pace Blue Earth Area’s effort, while Grant Strukel supplied 13 points and pocketed four steals.

Caelan Sanders generated 11 points, Cameron Anderson produced nine points and pulled down four rebounds, while Austin Thielfoldt distributed five assists for the Bucs.

Blue Earth Area (8-9) travels to St. James Area on Thursday night, while United South Central (11-8) hits the road to Blooming Prairie.

Mankato Loyola 60, Truman/ Martin Luther/GHEC 58 — Ben Ellingworth made two free throws with 2 seconds remaining in the game to help the Crusaders squeeze by the Jaguars by two during Valley Showcase action Monday night in Mankato.

Trailing 58-56, Isaac Johnson scored a layup via a Carter Spear steal with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game for the Jaguars.

Paxton Gravlin produced 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Jaguars, Johnson finished with 11 points, while Owen Wolter netted 11 points and doled out seven assists.

Cael Jaskulke supplied seven points and eight rebounds to the Jaguars’ effort, while Adam Heckman chipped in six points.

The Jaguars made 18 of 37 shots from 2-point distance, 5 of 19 behind the 3-point arc and 7 of 21 at the free throw line.

The Crusaders rallied from a 28-19 halftime deficit to pull off the comeback win.

Matt Helget tallied 17 points to top Loyola, while Ellingworth finished with 14 points.

The Jaguars (12-8) play host to Madelia at 7:15 p.m. tonight in a rescheduled game in Granada.

Girls Basketball

St. Peter 53, Blue Earth Area 49 — Morgan Kelly neared double-double territory to power the Saints to a four-point Big South Conference win over the Bucs on Monday night in St. Peter.

Kelly scored a game-high 25 points and garnered eight rebounds for St. Peter, while teammate Jacey Welp contributed 14 points to the winning performance.

Caitlin Rorman generated 18 points to top Blue Earth Area’s effort, while teammate Hannah Johnson supplied 14 points.

Blue Earth Area (11-9) plays host to nonconference opponent Medford tonight, while St. Peter (10-9) travels to Class AAA powerhouse Waseca for another Big South game.
