Geistfeld, Mavericks stampede Knights

LAKE CRYSTAL — Kolton Larson and Wyatt Geistfeld each scored 21 points to guide the Martin County West Mavericks to a 72-50 Valley Conference basketball victory over the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights on Friday night.

The Mavericks remain atop the Valley Conference standings with a perfect 9-0 record.

Geistfeld completed a double-double performance by grabbing 10 rebounds to complement outstanding all-around numbers of six steals, five assists and five blocked shots.

Zach Anderson dropped 14 points and brought down seven rebounds for the Mavericks, while Angel Reyes scored 10 points.

The Mavericks shot 24 of 39 from 2, 3-for-16 from 3 and 15 of 25 at the free throw line, while the Knights made 9 of 21 from 2, hit 9 of 30 3s and made 5 out of 11 free throws.

The Mavericks outrebounded the Knights 37-28 in the matchup.

James Sullivan scored 28 points for the Knights, while Caleb Shelton had 10.

MCW (11-5, 9-0 Valley) host a to-be-determined opponent at 7 p.m. Monday night in Sherburn for the Valley Conference showcase.

North Union 51, West Bend-Mallard 41 — Noah Morphew poured in 21 points to help the Warriors rally from a three-point halftime deficit to post a 10-point victory over the Wolverines on Friday night in West Bend, Iowa.

Elliott Hagebock produced another double-double performance of 10 points and 10 rebounds to complement a game-best six blocked shots for North Union.

Robert Ortman supplied 10 points, six rebounds and four assists to the Warriors’ winning ways, while Braden Pierce pocketed four steals and distributed four assists.

North Union (4-15) tips off the Iowa Class 1A, District 3 playoffs by playing host to Northwood-Kensett at 7 p.m. Monday night in Armstrong.

St. Peter 64, Blue Earth Area 49 — The Saints’ Wyatt Olson scored a game-best 29 points to lead St. Peter to a Big South Conference victory over the Bucs on Friday night in Blue Earth.

Cameron Anderson led BEA with 13 points, while Carter Bell had 12. Caelan Sanders contributed seven points to the Bucs’ effort and Zach Herrmann dropped six.

Seth Lokensgard joined Olson in double digits for the Saints with 11 points.

Blue Earth Area (8-8) plays United South Central in Wells on Monday night.

Girls Basketball

Cleveland 84, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/ Martin Luther 63 — Karen Ziebarth dropped 40 points to lead the Clippers’ winning ways in a Valley Conference Showcase game with the Jaguars on Friday night in Granada.

Jayme Balcom scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out seven assists for the Jaguars, while Eden Studer had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Michaelah Petrowiak scored 10 points and blocked three shots, Lydia Steinhaus brought down nine rebounds, while Rachel Stauter pocketed five steals.

The Jaguars (6-15) play Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 1:30 p.m. today in Nicollet in a Valley Showcase contest.
