Geistfeld powers MCW’s comeback victory

WINDOM — Martin County West junior forward Wyatt Geistfeld and his Maverick basketball teammates rallied from an early 17-6 deficit and a 42-39 halftime differential to pull off a 70-64 victory over the Windom Area Eagles during nonconference basketball action Monday night.

The Mavericks outscored the Eagles by a 31-22 second-half margin, including netting nine consecutive points to close out the contest in Windom.

Geistfeld erupted for season-highs of 30 points and 23 rebounds, while teammate Kolton Larson contributed 12 points and seven boards to the comeback win.

Geistfeld, Larson and Dawson Weber helped pace the Mavericks’ 53-26 rebounding advantage on the night.

Weber garnered 10 rebounds and scored six points for Martin County West, teammate Zach Anderson netted 11 points, while Angel Reyes supplied nine points.

The Mavericks connected on 24 of 38 shots from 2-point range for 63 percent, only 3 of 19 behind the 3-point arc and 13 of 19 at the free throw line.

Eric Pfeffer scored 25 points to top Windom Area’s performance, teammate Kobe Lovell netted 19 points and Austin Doorenbos chipped in 14 points.

The Eagles made 13 of an incredible 42 3-point attempts, 8 of 22 from 2-point range and 9 of 11 at the charity stripe.

Martin County West (10-5) plays host to Adrian tonight in Sherburn in another nonconference game.

Blue Earth Area 72, New Ulm 55 — Sophomore forward Cameron Anderson produced a game-high double-double to power the Bucs to a 17-point victory over the Eagles during Big South Conference basketball action Monday night in New Ulm.

Anderson poured in 18 of his game-leading 27 points to help Blue Earth Area outscore New Ulm by a 46-28 margin during the second half after trailing 27-26 at intermission.

Anderson also pulled down a game-best 13 rebounds and pocketed three steals.

Caelan Sanders netted 15 points for the Bucs, while teammate Austin Thielfoldt produced solid all-around numbers of 13 points, a game-best seven assists, five rebounds and three steals in the victory.

Carter Bell scored seven points and doled out four assists, while Zach Herrmann pulled down seven boards to go with four points for the Bucs.

Braden Zimmerman scored 14 points to top the Eagles.

Blue Earth Area (8-7) travels to Windom tonight for another conference game.

New Ulm (5-13) plays host to Big South opponent and Class AAA No. 2-ranked Waseca on Thursday night.
