Morris/Benson Area boys hockey outlasts Fairmont Area

FAIRMONT — A third-period goal rush lifted the Storm over the Cardinals.

Morris/Benson Area beat Fairmont Area 7-5 in a hockey matchup at Martin County Arena on Saturday.

Entering the final segment tied at 2, the Storm scored five goals to the Cardinals’ three.

Fairmont Area opened the final segment with two goals to take its first lead since the first period.

Hudson Artz scored a minute into the final segment off an assist from Eli Anderson. Anderson took the puck up the ice before sending it back to Artz who deked right to left in front of the net to get past the Storm goalie.

Karson Legred extended the Cardinals’ lead with a goal at 15:32 off an assist from Tanner DeWar.

The Storm answered with an unassisted goal from Kellen Erdahl with 12:26 left in the final segment, before the Cardinals’ Carter Leiding scored off DeWar’s second assist with 11:43 left.

The Storm scored four consecutive unassisted goals to close out the game.

Jack Riley scored with 11:22 left, Will Breuer scored on a power play at 9:15 and Breuer scored again with 4:42 remaining.

Down by one, Fairmont Area called a timeout with a minute left and pulled Tyson Geerdes from the goal to get an extra attacker.

With 8 seconds remaining, Brady Loge sent a puck from the Storm’s defensive blue line into the Cardinals’ open net.

Fairmont Area head coach Kris Olson said the Cardinals didn’t finish out the full 51 minutes.

“We had it and we lost it,” Olson said. “It’s a tough one. Once again it comes back to needing to play a full game. We didn’t put our 51 minutes up.”

Fairmont Area got the game’s scoring started in the first period.

Carson Kuhl scored off a double assist from Artz and Anderson less than 30 seconds into the game when Anderson’s shot was blocked right to Kuhl, who wristed it past the Storm goalie.

MBA didn’t stay quiet for long as Mathew Tolifson scored off an assist from Jack Riley with 14:15 left in the opening segment, and Loge scored off an assist from Brady Goff with 16 seconds remaining.

Anderson scored the lone Cardinal goal of the second period off a Kuhl assist with 12:20 left in the middle segment.

MBA outshot Fairmont Area 33-31 in the matchup.

Geerdes made 26 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals.
