Cardinals make it 5 Relays in a row
FAIRMONT — Five consecutive Sentinel Relays’ Class AA girls track & field team championships and counting.
The Fairmont Cardinals overwhelmed the seven-team competition by winning 10 of the 18 events and garnering eight runner-up showings for good measure during Friday’s 63rd running of the largest outstate regular-season meet.
The Cardinals coasted to a landslide victory of 206-111 over the runner-up Hutchinson Tigers to exit Bob Bonk Track with the famed V-shaped hardware in hand.
“We definitely demonstrated good balance and possessed a lot of consistency up and down our entire lineup today,” said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk. “We expected good things to happen for us today, and they did.”
Lizzy Subbert nearly delivered a triple gold crown performance for the hometown Cardinals by displaying her multi-tasking skills on the track and in the field events.
Subbert outdueled long-time rival Melissa Hagedorn of Blue Earth Area for top honors in the high hurdles, 16.41 seconds to 16.99, before clearing 5 foot, 2 inches to edge out Fairmont teammate Bethany Linse for the gold medal in the high jump. Linse earned the silver medal by arching her back over the bar at 4-10.
Subbert then battled Cardinal teammate Savanah Baker in another narrow showdown for superiority in the triple jump. Baker struck gold by spraying the sand at a distance of 32-11 1/2, with Subbert claiming second place at 32-10 3/4.
Fairmont amassed even more points via its literal strength, power and finesse in the throws department.
Allison Lardy, who’s headed to the University of North Dakota on a track scholarship next fall, shattered her own Sentinel Relays’ Class AA girls shot put record. Lardy powered her second of four heaves to the new mark of 42-0 1/2 to eclipse her 2017 Relays mark of 40-4 3/4.
“With true team section, (Big South) conference and the (MSHSL) section meets coming up in the next three or four weeks, I know I have to keep my distances up and try to be more consistent with each and every throw,” said Lardy, who owns the school record in the shot at 42-11 1/2. “We have to be mentally strong coming down the stretch.”
Brenna Cutler proved that theory by capturing silver behind Lardy by heaving the 8-pound orb to a distance of 36-9 to edge out Blue Earth Area’s Lindsey Norman for runner-up honors. Norman marked at 36 feet even twice to earn the bronze medal.
Brenna Cutler and Lardy then traded places in the discus, with Cutler hurling to a first-place mark of 107-5. Lardy cleared 95-4 to claim second place in front of Lindsey Norman’s toss of 86-8.
Fairmont’s Iliana Ramon outdueled teammate Tabitha Thatcher in the 3,200-meter run by crossing the finish line in 12:21.65. Thatcher earned the silver in 12:28.16.
Lexi Kaufman then displayed her stamina and long-distance running skills by netting second in the mile run in 5:50.83.
The Cardinals, however, also piled up the team points in the sprints as Joni Becker captured top honors in the open 400 (1:00.58, while fleet-footed teammate Grace Higgins nearly became a double-gold winner by winning the 100-meter dash (13.32) before capturing second in the open 200 (27.42).
Becker added two more gold medals to her Sentinel Relays’ resume by running legs on Fairmont’s winning 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Jenna Gustafson, Becker, Baker and Higgins exchanged handoffs for a first-place time of 1:50.3 in the 4×2, while Emma Koehler, Brooke Hunwardsen, Kaufman and Becker combined for a gold-medal time of 4:14.97 in the 4×4.
Koehler also contributed a second-place showing in the 300 hurdles (48.82) and a bronze-medal performance in the high hurdles (17.07) to pack even more scoring punch to the Cardinals’ dominant team triumph on Friday.
Blue Earth Area’s Nicole Lium cleared 10-0 to earn first-place honors in the pole vault, while clearing 4-10 to place third in the high jump.
Fairmont competes in the True Team Section 2AA Meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato East. Blue Earth Area competes in the True Team Section 2A Meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Wells.
