Bauer wins 2nd straight 1A state cross country crown
FORT DODGE, Iowa — Riley Bauer put an exclamation mark on his Iowa prep cross country resume on Saturday.
Bauer, a senior at North Union High School, covered the 5,000-meter course at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge in a winning time of 16:14.2 to capture his second consecutive Iowa Class 1A state championship.
Junior Sean McDermott crossed the finish line in 16:20.6 to claim runner-up individual state accolades in guiding Madrid to a third-place showing in the team competition.
Senior Brycen Wallace posted a third-place overall finish of 16:23.1 to power Nodaway Valley to the Class 1A state boys team cross country championship with 56 points.
Bauer, the 2016 Iowa Class 1A state cross country champion, generated the third top-six showing during his four consecutive state individual appearances.
Bauer placed sixth as a freshman, netted 65th place as a sophomore and struck gold as a junior by producing a first-place time of 16:09.7.
