C-squad football blanks New Ulm

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals coasted to a 54-0 triumph over the New Ulm Eagles during C-squad football action Monday night.

Gavin Rodning generated 160 rushing yards and two touchdowns to pace Fairmont, while Hudson Artz gained 65 yards and scored a TD via the ground to complement a 35-yard scoring reception.

Zach Jorgensen netted 105 rushing yards and two TDs for the Cardinals, Jack Hested threw for three scores, while Dan Betts caught two TD passes.

Alex Moeller recorded two quarterback sacks for Fairmont, while Clay Brown recovered a fumble.

FHS football climbs to 4th

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals football team climbed two spots to No. 4 in this week’s Associated Press’ Class 3A state poll.

St. Croix Lutheran remained atop the Class 3A rankings.

Sibley East, Fairmont’s top Section 3 rival, dropped from No. 3 to the eighth spot in the 3A poll.

Redwood Valley, Pipestone Area and Maple River captured the Nos. 5, 6 and 7 spots, respectively, in the Class 2A rankings.

Marshall (8-0) actually dropped to No. 3 this week.

Wagner tabbed pre-all Big Ten

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — University of Minnesota senior Carlie Wagner has been named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team by both coaches and media covering the conference.

Wagner, a native of New Richland, has twice earned All-Big Ten Second Team recognition.

After combining with Rachel Banham to form the nation’s top scoring duo in 2015-16, Wagner led the Gophers in scoring with an average of 19.1 points per game last season. She made a team-high 82 3s.

Wagner’s 1,597 points are eighth on Minnesota’s all-time scoring list, and her 206 3s rank fourth. Wagner’s career scoring average of 16.6 points per game is seventh best in the program’s history.

NFL suspends Vikes’ Sendejo

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has suspended Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo for one game for violating player safety rules in Sunday’s win against the Baltimore Ravens.

Sendejo’s hit on Ravens receiver Mike Wallace on Baltimore’s seconds series of the game was directly to the head. Wallace’s helmet flew off during the collision, and Sendejo was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Sendejo will be eligible to return to the active roster next Monday.
