Central Lyon roars past North Union in volleyball regional

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Sophomore setter Kiley Metzger distributed a match-best 22 assists and recorded 11 digs to complement three aces behind 16-for-16 serving to power the Central Lyon Lions to a three-game sweep over the North Union Warriors during Iowa Class 2A volleyball playoff action Monday night in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Central Lyon posted game wins of 25-12, 25-20, 25-12, to end North Union’s season with a 13-18 overall record.

Central Lyon (23-8) advances to face West Lyon at 7 p.m. Thursday night in a Region 1 semifinal clash in Inwood, Iowa.

West Lyon gained the regional semifinals on the strength of a 25-13, 25-16, 31-29 quarterfinal victory over Rock Valley.

Junior hitter Brecken Boekhout pounded out a match-best 10 kills, made 16 digs and completed 6 of 6 serves for Central Lyon, while senior spiker Bailey Herman supplied seven kills and tallied one ace behind 10-for-11 serving.

Junior Nikki Blomendaal made a match-best 20 digs and was perfect from the service area with a 12-for-12 performance, including an ace, for the Lions.

Sophomore hitter Sutton Schlumbohm contributed five kills, 16 digs, three blocks and two aces behind 19-for-19 serving for Central Lyon on the night.

Andrea Korthais added two aces behind a 7-for-8 serving performance for the Lions.

Senior playmaker Kate Anderson doled out a team-best 16 set assists for North Union to complement 14 digs, a lineup-leading four blocks and 10-for-11 serving on the match.

Senior outside hitter Bre Anderson delivered five kills, recorded seven digs and proved a perfect 10-for-10 at the service area for the Warriors.

Dayna Umscheid topped North Union’s offensive performance by hammering six kills to go with seven digs, while teammate Aly Bierstedt produced a team-leading 16 digs and was perfect on six serves during the three-game span.

Chloe Lofstrom and Shawn Person each contributed four kills to the Warriors’ effort, while Person went 7 of 7 at the service area.
