Cardinals drop both soccer openers

ST. PETER — St. Peter sophomore midfielder Amelia Carlson produced a game-best hat trick to squeeze the hometown Saints to a season-opening 4-2 Big South Conference soccer victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Thursday in St. Peter.

Striker Joni Becker triggered the Cardinals’ first goal of the season and their opening game by converting Claudia Bleess’ pass into the league clash’s initial point during the first half.

Trailing 2-1 at halftime, Fairmont Area striker Abby DeWitt knotted the game by cashing in Celia Simpson’s assist for a goal at the 37-minute juncture of the second half.

St. Peter generated the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal at the 26:30 mark before sealing the win with a score with just 2 minutes remaining in regulation.

Kiki Krueger tallied the Saints’ other goal on the contest.

The Cardinals’ offense chalked up eight shots on goal, while backup netminder Brooke Hunwardsen collected 13 saves for Fairmont Area.

Fairmont Area (0-1) plays host to Osseo at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

St. Peter posted a narrow 2-0 victory over Fairmont Area during season-opening junior varsity action Thursday in St. Peter.

Goalie Kaiden Boerner recorded 10 saves for the Cardinals (0-1), which generated eight shots on goal.

Rayah Quiring and Mackenzie Householder each produced two goals and one assist to power Fairmont Area to a season-opening 7-0 triumph over St. Peter during C-squad action Thursday in St. Peter.

Sami Lenort tallied one goal and one assist for the Cardinals, Selma Bleess and Taylor Spencer each supplied one goal, while Alexis Newville and Lexie Hinz distributed assists.

Netminder Cadee Becker delivered 10 saves to earn the shutout for Fairmont Area (1-0).

Boys Soccer

Worthington 7, Fairmont Area 0 — Striker Jon Keoduangsy erupted for a game-best four goals to power the Trojans to a season-opening victory over the Cardinals on Thursday in Worthington.

Keoduangsy netted Worthington’s first, fourth and fifth goals, while teammate Ek Kyoo generated the home team’s second and third scores, respectively, to pace a 5-0 halftime edge.

Kyoo and Keoduangsy each tallied one goal apiece during the second half to cap the Trojans’ Big South Conference win.

Goalkeeper Tyson Geerdes produced 29 saves for Fairmont Area, which notched 10 shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (0-1) travels to New Ulm on Saturday for a 1 p.m. league contest.

Worthington 5-2–7

Worthington edged Fairmont Area, 1-0, during season-opening junior varsity action Thursday night in Worthington.

Netminder Alex Wannarka collected 20 saves for the Cardinals (0-1), who mustered seven shots on goal.
