Post 36 sweeps two, leaving New Ulm ‘blue’

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Legion Post 36 baseball team utilized a strong offensive performance to sweep New Ulm Blue on Thursday at Herb Wolf Field.

“We had some really good at-bats with two outs,” first-year Fairmont head coach Levi Becker said. “We came up big in some situations and that’s where our big inning went — guys came up with two outs and put balls in gaps. That’s where we scored our runs.”

Post 36 engineered a 10-run second inning for a 12-8 win in the second game after opening the doubleheader with a 6-2 win against Blue.

TJ Sweere and Ryley Hanson scored on Jack Fairbairn’s single to give Blue the early 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2.

Post 36, however, answered with 10 runs in the top of the second. Jordan Wolter led off with a single to right field, Jacob Tennyson walked to first and Nick Segar laid down a bunt to fill the bags.

With a swing of the bat, Dan Reiter doubled to bring in Wolter and Tennyson to tie the game. A Blue error scored Segar and allowed Nate Kallenbach first base. Reiter and Kallenbach, who stole second, were able to get home on Lance Becker’s hit to center field for a 5-2 score.

Sam Schwieger and Brady Allen both singled to reload the bases. Although Allen got out on a fielder’s choice that put Collin Steuber on, Becker trotted home for Post 36’s sixth run of the inning.

Blue pitcher TJ Sweere got the second out by striking out Wolter, but gave up a hit to Tennyson, plating Schwieger and Steuber. Tennyson and Segar, who walked, added Post 36’s final runs of the inning on Kallenbach’s single.

Slowly but surely, Blue attempted to cut into its eight-run deficit, starting in the fifth inning.

With two out, Fairbairn singled to right field before Kallenbach walked Brendan Bieraugel.

Shane Esser and Kaden Gilb each recorded RBI base hits to score Fairbairn and Bieraugel with two out. Post 36 notched its final out to leave courtesy runner Ryan Esser and Gilb stranded.

Post 36 got the two runs back as Segar, who got a leadoff double, and Kallenbach, who singled, scored in the top half of the sixth inning.

In the home half, Luke Scheid walked to first, moved up a base on Sweere’s hit and got to third when Lance Becker walked Brandon Seidl. Scheid halved the score, 10-5, by jetting home on a wild pitch.

Blue scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh — two of which came from Scheid’s double — but Post 36 held off the comeback bid.

Steuber, Kallenbach and Lance Becker combined to allow eight runs on 12 hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.

“I think it made a big difference. We had guys that were throwing a little harder, we had guys that had some off speed,” Levi Becker said about the pitching rotation. “But, the main reason we did that is so we have fresh arms ready to go for Monday against Mankato National.”

In the first game, Steuber collected four RBIs and Lance Becker scored three runs in the 6-2 victory.

Lance Becker’s first run on Schwieger’s one-out double in the bottom of the first inning. He then led off the third with a hit to right-center field, took two bases on Schwieger’s hit then stole home on an errant pitch. Schwieger crossed home plate on Steuber’s single to right field for a 3-2 game.

With two out in the fourth, Steuber hit a double to the center field wall, bringing in Kallenbach, Lance Becker and Allen. Kallenbach and Lance Becker both singled to get on, while Seidl walked Allen.

Scheid and Sweere contributed Blue’s runs in the first and third innings, respectively.

Kallenbach and Lance Becker both finished the doubleheader with four hits and three RBIs. Schwieger added four hits to the effort.
