Falcons zip Jaguars in state baseball opener

JORDAN — Wabasha-Kellogg senior Liam Blaschko proved the ultimate prep sports multi-tasker this week.

Blaschko penciled in a two-round total of 84-83–167 to earn a share of 23rd place during the Class A state golf tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.

The Falcons’ hard-throwing right-hander then switched styles of gloves, exchanged his driver for an aluminum bat on Thursday, and fired a four-hit complete-game shutout to pace unseeded Wabasha-Kellogg’s 2-0 Class A state quarterfinal baseball victory over the No. 3-seeded Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars at the Mini Met in Jordan.

Wabasha-Kellogg (17-8) advances to face No. 2-seeded Legacy Christian Academy of Andover (20-4) in today’s 2:30 p.m. state semifinal back at the Mini-Met in Jordan. Legacy Christian Academy dispatched unseeded Ely (20-9) by a 9-4 quarterfinal decision.

Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman (21-5) faces Ely in today’s 12:30 p.m. consolation semifinal at the Chaska Athletic Park in Chaska. The winner advances to play the survivor between Fosston and Pillager at 3 p.m. today for the Class A state consolation final in Chaska.

No. 1-seeded Parkers Prairie (24-2) faces No. 4-seeded Red Rock Central/ Westbrook-Walnut Grove (23-3) in today’s noon state semifinal in Jordan. Parkers Prairie shut out Pillager, 8-0, while RRC/WWG rolled by Fosston, 11-1 in six innings.

Blaschko recorded a game-high 11 strikeouts to cause the Jaguars, who collected four hits to go with three walks, to strand eight base runners on the state quarterfinal.

“I thought both pitchers (Blaschko and Jaguars starter Derek Shoen) turned in great performances today,” said Jaguars head coach Scott Chirpich. “We just couldn’t come up with the big hit when we needed it with runners on.

“We definitely need to regroup (tonight) and come out with a better offensive approach against Ely.”

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, James Schrunk lined the first of his two singles on the game to left field to trigger the Jaguars’ two-out offensive threat.

Shoen drilled a two-hop grounder to the Falcons’ third baseman, who overthrew the first baseman with the errant toss landing out of play. The umpires placed Schrunk at third base and Shoen at second.

First-year Falcons head coach Tim Ruff opted to issue an intentional walk to No. 3 batter Ethan Hurn to create a force-out situation at any base. Blaschko then worked out of the jam by freezing the next Jaguar batter via a breaking pitch for a called third strike.

Blaschko, who proved double-trouble offensively for the Jaguars, went 2-for-3, including singling home the state quarterfinal game’s initial run in the top of the fourth. Jamie Hewitt drew a leadoff walk, took second on a passed ball and circled the bases on Blaschko’s clutch RBI single to center.

The Falcons converted the Jaguars’ error on a leadoff strikeout of Jackson Gosse into an insurance run during the top of the sixth. Hewitt bunted Gosse to second before Wabasha-Kelloggs’ leadoff batter circled the bases when Cooper Holtorf’s slow-rolling infield hit to short was thrown away at first.

Blaschko recorded two quick flyouts during the last half of the seventh inning before Schrunk and Shoen triggered a late comeback on the strength of back-to-back singles.

Blaschko, however, preserved his shutout by ringing up his 11th and final strikeout.

Shoen recorded 10 strikeouts, issued only one walk and allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits in seven yeoman innings of work to absorb the loss.
