Lardy, FHS 4×8 earn 2nd at state track & field meet

ST. PAUL — The Fairmont Cardinals made the most out of the final day of the Class A state track & field meet, recording four top-five finishes and two more medalist performances on Saturday at Hamline University.

“It’s hard to predict how everything is going to go because everybody’s good, but I thought it went really well. Four top-fives is very satisfying,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said.

Meanwhile, Martin County West’s Cora Olson etched her final prep triple jump into the record books. The senior leaped to a distance of 36 feet, 1 1/2 inches for a school record and sixth-place state finish. Olson previously broke the old record at the Section 2 meet a week before at 34-11.

Jordan’s Jenna Kes defended her triple jump crown for a third straight year, marking a 40-2 3/4.

Andrew Moeller was the Cardinals’ lone returner from last year’s state-winning 4×800-meter relay team and helped this year’s team to a second-place finish of 8:17.40. Leyton Becker led off the race and Moeller took the second leg. Dayton Pasch and Dylan Kennedy capped the runner-up finish behind Mora (8:10.75).

“We had Andrew back from that group last year, and to come back and get second today was really neat,” Bonk said. “It’s (senior Leyton Becker’s) first year on the track and I know he’s really tickled to get a silver medal at the state meet as are all the guys.”

Jenna Pavich began her busy day by anchoring the Cardinals’ 4×800 relay. Pavich snuck past Luverne’s fourth runner Jadyn Anderson near the finish line to get Fairmont into the top five. Iliana Ramon, Molly Hawkins and Joni Becker ran in order to place fifth in 9:47.34.

Pavich and Hawkins finished their prep track & field careers with a fourth-place medal in the 4×400 relay.

“I thought Molly and Jenna really went out in style. They ran terrifically every time these two days,” Bonk said. “They’ve been two of our all-time greats, there’s no doubt about that.”

Hawkins took the second leg and Pavich supplied another anchor leg, while Grace Higgins and Becker ran the first and third legs, respectively, for a 4:02.21 race.

Pequot Lakes struck gold in the event, breaking the tape in 3:57.44.

Sandwiched between the two relays, Pavich placed seventh in the 400 (59.51) to complete her three-event day. Kya Phillips of Cristo Rey Jesuit School took gold in the race (56.40).

“We had some people that had a heavy workload, Jenna in particular with four 400s and an 800 in about 26 hours. She performed magnificently all five times,” Bonk said.

Alli Lardy made her presence known at her first state meet by garnering runner-up honors in the shot put for the Cardinals. The junior threw a 41-3 to International Falls’ Emma Gilbert’s winning toss of 42-7 3/4. Fairmont’s Brenna Cutler placed 11th with a 37-1 in her state debut.

Fairmont sprinter Wyatt Quiring timed the open 400 in 51.25 for sixth place as Tysen Schmidt from Plainview-Elgin-Millville had the winning time of 48.61.

In his first trip to state, Fairmont’s Hayden Berhow was 10th in the high jump with a 6-1. Tyl Woelber of Pipestone Area took the high jump title, posting a measurement of 6-7.

Millie Klefsaas of Staples-Motley broke her own record, adding 3 inches for a 12-3 to win the pole vault. Klefsaas set the record of 12-0 during last year’s meet. Blue Earth Area’s Nicole Lium vaulted 9-6 for 10th place.
