FAIRMONT — Senior singles player Tyler Head was selected as the Fairmont varsity boys tennis team’s MVP for the spring season.

Head, along with teammates Carter Klanderud, Andy Hagen and Connor Madsen, were tabbed all-Big South Conference choices, while Tony Joseph, Blake Haugen and Tyrell Zieske garnered honorable mention accolades.

Zieske netted Fairmont’s most improved award, while Hagen netted the Cardinal Award.

Joseph and Hagen earned academic all-state honors to help Fairmont’s team receive the Academic Gold Award, which is the highest academic achievement attainable.

Louisville ends Kentucky’s run

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brendan McKay’s pitching, combined with clutch hitting by Drew Ellis and Logan Taylor, paced Louisville’s 6-2 win over Kentucky during Super Regional baseball action Saturday.

The hometown Cardinals, who scratched the Wildcats by a 5-2 decision in Friday’s opener, swept the best-of-3 series to advance to the NCAA Division I College World Series.

Junior DH Luke Becker and Kentucky, which had never reached the Super Regional before, ended with a 43-23 record.

Ellis homered twice for Louisville, Taylor delivered extra-base hits and McKay scattered eight hits over 6 2/3 innings for the win.
