Louisville slides by Kentucky in Game 1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Drew Ellis produced four RBIs, including a three-run homer, to power the No. 7-seeded Louisville Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in Game 1 of their best-of-3 NCAA Super Regional baseball series on Friday.

Louisville (51-10) hosts Kentucky (43-22) in Game 2 at 11 a.m. today, with Wildcats’ 6-foot-11 sophomore Sean Hjelle, the SEC pitcher of the year, taking the mound against the Cardinals’ Brendan McKay, the SEC’s player of the year. The game will be aired on ESPN.

Louisville starting pitcher Kade McClure allowed three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Evan White homered off Cardinals’ closer Lincoln Henzman in the top of the ninth to help the Wildcats avoid being shut out.

Kentucky cleanup batter Luke Becker, a former Fairmont High School standout, went 0-for-4 on the contest.
