North Union’s Bauer defends state mile crown
DES MOINES, Iowa — North Union long-distance phenom Riley Bauer saved his best performance for last during the third and final day of the Iowa Class 1A state track & field meet in Des Moines.
Bauer shattered the Iowa Class 1A boys 1,600-meter run record by breaking the tape in 4:18.43 on Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Bauer avenged his second-place showing to Central Lyon junior sensation Gable Sieperda during Thursday’s 3,200-meter state run. Ironically, Bauer and Sieperda eclipsed both 31-year-old records achieved by Gehlen Catholic’s Paul Barnhart in the mile and 2-mile competitions.
Bauer’s gold-medal performance in the 1,600 erased Barnhart’s time of 4:20.35 set in 1986. Ironically, Sieperda turned in a second-place time of 4:20.33, which also eclipsed Barnhart’s long-standing record.
Sieperda posted a winning time of 9:15.30 in the 3,200 on Thursday to wipe out Barnhart’s mark of 9:18.22 set in 1986. Bauer pocketed second place in the 2-mile run in 9:29.85 to improve on his bronze-medal performance a year ago.
Bauer successfully defended his 1,600-meter state championship on Saturday after generating the second-fastest qualifying time.
“Both Riley and Gable are juniors this year, so I’m sure we’ll see a couple more of their head-to-head battles next year,” said North Union head coach Loren Looft.
Bauer’s performances in the 1,600, 3,200 and medley relay races helped pace North Union to an eighth-place showing in the Iowa Class 1A boys team standings with 26 points.
Lisbon ran away with the 2017 Class 1A boys team title by producing 89 points.
