Warriors’ medley relay garners 2nd at state meet

DES MOINES, Iowa — North Union junior Riley Bauer garnered another silver medal during Day 2 of the Iowa Class 1A state track & field competition at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

After earning a runner-up showing in the 3,200-meter run on Thursday, Bauer ran the anchor leg on the Warriors’ state runner-up distance medley relay team during Friday’s meet.

Junior Blake Crawmer led off the baton exchange before handing off to junior Derek Thompson. Thompson then traded the baton to senior Trent Pedersen en route to Bauer to post a second-place time of 3:35.48. The foursome qualified for state with a time of 3:41.98.

Lisbon’s Derek Bova, Bailey Arwine, Blake Langhurst and Payton Bahl captured the Iowa Class 1A state championship by breaking the tape in the distance medley relay with a gold-medal time of 3:34.85.

In the Class 1A girls 4×100-meter relay preliminaries on Friday, North Union’s foursome placed 16th in 53.40 to miss advancing to Saturday’s state final.

Kyarsten Mullen, who ran in Thursday’s 100- and 200-meter preliminaries, ran the opening leg on the Warriors’ relays squad before handing off to Rory McClellan. Alexis Valvick and Olivia Marlow closed out the final two legs of the 4×100, respectively.

Pekin’s Zoey Wright, Emilee Linder, Cate Roth and Kaylee Linder exchanged handoffs to post the top qualifying time in 50.95.

Wapsie Valley’s Kaci Beesecker, Abby Buzynski, Kinley Saulsberry and Hanna Risse claimed the eighth and final qualifying spot in the 4×100 with a time of 52.07.

In the boys’ field events, North Union sophomore Evan Hagebock finished in a tie for 13th place in the high jump. Ironically, Hagebock advanced to state with a leap of 5-10.

Calmus-Wheatland senior Cole Moeller captured the Class 1A state gold medal in the high jump by eclipsing 6-8.

Bauer will shoot for his third consecutive medal in as many days when he steps to the Drake Stadium track at 2:15 p.m. today in the finals of the 1,600-meter run.

Bauer, who captured the Iowa Class 1A state championship in the mile in 2016, posted the fastest qualifying time of 4:36.31.
