No. 8 Jaguars baseball collars Greyhounds

NEW ULM — Derek Shoen delivered the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to help propel the Class 1A, No. 8-ranked Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars to a 5-3 non-league baseball victory over the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds on Friday night in New Ulm.

Nate Hauser’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth frame helped the Greyhounds tie the game at 3-all. Garrett Balcom then walked in the top of the seventh and scored the go-ahead run on Shoen’s RBI double.

Shoen produced two of the Jaguars’ seven hits on the game and scored three runs, while teammate Ethan Hurn collected three hits, including a double, drove in a pair of runs and scored once.

Zach Jahnz produced two RBIs on a run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly for the Jaguars.

Hurn allowed one hit and struck out one in 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory for the Jaguars.

Shoen started on the mound and allowed three unearned runs on six hits, fanned one and walked four in 5 1/3 innings to receive no decision.

Mark Schommer hurled a complete game, allowing five runs on seven hits in seven frames on the hill. Schoemer struck out four and walked three to take the loss for Cathedral.

The Jaguars (15-3) travel to St. Clair on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. regular-season finale.

Martin County West 4, Redwood Valley 3 — Maverick reliever Noah Ringnell notched the game-ending strikeout and save to thwart the Cardinals’ seventh-inning comeback, 4-3, during nonconference action Friday night in Redwood Falls.

MCW starting pitcher Cam Dressen allowed three runs on five hits, struck out three, walked five and hit one batter in 6 2/3 innings to net the win.

Colton Leiding went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the Mavericks’ six-hit performance, while Jesse Spear went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Payton Anderson added an RBI single and a run scored.

Martin County West (5-12, 3-5 Valley) travels to Mountain Lake Area on Tuesday for its regular-season finale.

Martin Luther/GHEC 8, Alden-Conger 4 — Marissa Steinhaus tossed a four-hit complete game to guide the Jaguars to an 8-4 Valley Conference Showcase win over the Knights on Friday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Steinhaus recorded eight strikeouts, issued six walks and allowed four runs — only two earned — to net the victory.

Lydia Steinhaus and Michaelah Petrowiak each produced two hits, with Steinhaus collecting an RBI for the Jaguars.

Alex Schuder generated two RBIs with a single, Lizzie Oothoudt delivered an RBI single, while Marissa Steinhaus, Sarah Shane and Sadee Ziemer each contributed hits to the Jaguars’ nine-hit effort.

The Jaguars (4-15) await the results of the seeding meeting for their first-round Section 2A playoff game on Tuesday.

Mankato Loyola 9, Martin County West 8 — Zoey Weller collected three RBIs on the strength of two hits to help the Crusaders edge the Mavericks by one run during Valley Conference Showcase action Friday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Sarah Haugum contributed an RBI double to Loyola’s winning ways.

Mercedes Moeller belted a two-run home run in the third for the Mavericks, while Eivey Kuehl generated two hits, including a double, for two RBIs. Karlee Thiesse also produced two hits and two RBIs for MCW.

Jordan Stahl allowed six runs on five hits, fanned six and walked two in five-plus innings to receive the loss. Sierra Williamson allowed three runs and one hit in one inning of relief, striking out one and walking three.

Martin County West (12-6) earned the No. 2 seed for the Section 3AA, South Sub-Section playoffs and plays host to Redwood Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Fox Lake Sports Complex in Welcome.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 11, Madelia/Truman 4 — Sydney Ziegler notched the win in relief and collected two hits offensively to steer the Knights to an 11-4 Valley Conference Showcase win over the Jayhawks on Friday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Ziegler went 2-for-5 with a triple, generated one RBI and scored once, while Madison Graham and Bailey Burnett each doubled in two runs apiece for LCWM.

Ziegler struck out eight, issued only one walk and allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief to receive the victory.

Courtney Davis and Madison Mueller each produced two hits and one run scored for the Jayhawks, with Davis collecting a double. Brytni Drevlow doubled and scored a run for M/T, while Briana Ardolf and Lydia Studer each supplied a single and one RBI.

Davis allowed three runs on two hits, walked seven and struck out two in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Madelia/Truman (4-16) awaits the results of its seeding meeting for Tuesday’s first round of the Section 2A playoffs.
