Fairmont tracksters sweep home triad

FAIRMONT — Alli Lardy breaking Fairmont’s shot put record is almost becoming as certain as death and taxes. The junior thrower posted a new school record of 41 feet, 7 inches in the Cardinal girls track & field team’s 175 1/2-point win on Friday at Bob Bonk Track.

New Ulm was second with 68 1/2 points and Loyola/Cleveland netted 19 points for third.

Hayden Berhow swept the jumps as the Cardinals boys team totaled 170 points to win the last home meet of the regular season. New Ulm (59) and Loyola/Cleveland (36) finished second and third.

“It was a little iffy if we should have it or not,” Cardinals head coach Bob Bonk said. “We’re in the time of year where we want to keep competing. Otherwise, we’d have had a 12-day span between the (Big South) Conference Meet and (Section 2A, South Sub-Section 6 Meet). So, I’m glad we got it in.”

Brenna Cutler and Claire Cutler followed Lardy for a shot put 1-2-3 sweep with measurements of 38-1 1/2 and 33-8 1/4, respectively, in the victory. The Cutler twins added a 2-3 finish in the discus as Brenna Cutler threw a runnerup distance of 107-11 to Claire Cutler’s 104-1.

Jenna Gustafson ran the first leg of the winning 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Gustafson ran a 54.9 in the 4×100 with Cori Emler, Brooke Hunwardsen and Savanah Baker after she and Baker completed the 4×200 in 2:03.6 with Jenna Pavich and Molly Hawkins.

Gustafson, Pavich, Molly Hawkins and Grace Higgins won the 4×400, breaking the tape in 4:22.8.

Individually, Pavich took the 800-meter title with a time of 2:32, and Iliana Ramon posted a 2:35.4 for the runnerup spot. Ramon was also the runnerup in the 1,600-meter race (5:48.1), behind Laura Thompson’s winning finish in 5:44.5.

Emily Haugen was third in the mile run (5:59.7) and won the 3,200-meter run in 13:00.2. Molly Hawkins took the open 400 crown with a time of 1:03.6 to Hunwardsen’s second-place finish of 1:05.9.

Baker added a top finish in the triple jump, leaping 31-6 with Olivia Anderson (29-7 1/4) and Brielle Meade (29-7) following in order. Higgins and Joni Becker went 1-2 in the 200 with times of 28.4 and 28.6 for more Cardinals scoring.

Lizzy Subbert performed in both track and field events, winning the 100-meter hurdles (16.2) and finishing second in the high jump (4-10). Emma Koehler marked a second-place finish in the high hurdles with a time of 17.2 and Mikayla Stradtman was third with an 18.4. Koehler then won the 300-meter hurdles (51.7) just before Megan Hawkins’ time of 53.3 for second.

Andrea Thate produced another Cardinals victory, getting up 9-6 in the pole vault.

Berhow generated three wins for the Cardinals, taking the long jump (18-9), triple jumo (40-10 3/4) and high jump (6-0).

“Hayden jumped well not only in the high jump, but the triple and he won the long,” Bonk said.

Berhow edged out Lucas Simpson in the high jump in fewer attempts, while Josh Heinze posted a 17-8 1/4 in the long jump for second.

Simpson won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.3, followed by Devin Johnson’s second-place time of 16.8 and Chris Lebert’s 17.4 for third.

Levi Bulfer and Nick Thate went 1-2 in the pole vault as Bulfer tied his career-best vault of 12-0 and Thate set a new personal best at 11-6.

Kade Fritz won the shot put for the Cardinals (44-11 3/4) and Theo Krumholz was second (43-11 1/2). Krumholz nabbed top honors in the discus with a heave of 128-7.

Darrian Kueker crossed the finish line in 11:38.1 to win the 3,200-meter run and Andrew Moeller won the 800 in 2:19.3. Leyton Becker and Cody Lane went 2-3 in the 800-meter race with times of 2:19.7 and 2:23.9, respectively.

Moeller, Bulfer, Seth Carlmark and Dayton Pasch teammed up to win the 4×400 relay in 3:42.6. Bulfer ran with Tyler Johnson, Austin Schwidder and Wyatt Quiring in 1:37.5 to win the 4×200, and posted a winning time of 48.0 with Schwidder, Tyler Johnson and Shyiem Thomas in the 4×100.

Leyton Becker, Dylan Kennedy, Pasch and Moeller then ran the 4×800 in 8:53.3 for the win and Cardinals relay sweep.
