Warriors’ boys golf earns 1st state bid

FORT DODGE, Iowa — North Union mentor Ken Sabin and the Warriors boys golf lineup made school history during Thursday’s Iowa Class 1A district tournament in Fort Dodge.

Nathan Eaton and Parker Oleson each broke 80 at the Lakeside Golf Course to engineer North Union’s runner-up team total of 333 — seven strokes behind district champion Boyden-Hull.

Both North Union and Boyden-Hull earned bids to the Class 1A state tournament next Friday and Saturday at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, Iowa. Tee times for both days will be determined.

“I’ve had a number of people associated with the golf program research it, and I believe it’s the first time in any of the schools’ histories that we’ve had a team qualify for the state golf tournament,” Sabin said in reference to the former school districts of Armstrong-Ringsted, North Kossuth and Sentral which comprise North Union.

Eaton and Oleson continued their low-scoring ways by carding 18-hole rounds of 36-39–75 and 39-37–76, respectively, to earn top-three individual accolades for the Warriors.

Eaton, who produced nine pars and a team-leading four birdies, outdueled Boyden-Hull golfer Davis Van Roekel — who penciled in a 38-37–75 — for the district individual championship.

Oleson, who generated a team-leading 12 pars to complement one birdie, captured third-place individual honors with his 76 to merit his third consecutive trip to the state meet.

Brady Anderson connected for six pars to pace his 18-hole total of 42-44–86 for North Union, while Preston Brandenburg completed the Warriors’ counting scores by penciling in a 46-50–96, including four pars.
