Mavericks 2nd, Jayhawks 3rd at Valley track & field meet

LAKE CRYSTAL — St. Clair junior standout Mitchell Weber established the only two new records during Tuesday night’s Valley Conference track & field meet in Lake Crystal.

Weber eclipsed his own mark of 177 feet, 11 inches set a year ago by hurling the discus to a winning distance of 178-2. Weber also broke a 28-year-old record — 53-4 — in the shot put by clearing 54-1.

Weber also placed second in the long jump by spraying the sand at 19-8 to help power the Cyclones to 134 points to capture the conference boys team championship.

Mankato Loyola/Cleveland netted runner-up honors with 122, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet claimed third only one point behind at 121, Martin County West finished fourth (69), while Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (59) and Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther (51) completed the six-team field, respectively.

LCWM/Nicollet sophomore sprinter MaKenna Thurston struck gold in both the 100- and 400-meter dashes, while pocketing silver in the open 200 to engineer the KnightRaiders’ league championship in the girls division.

Thurston crossed the finish line first in the 100 in 13.01 seconds and won the 400 in 61.63, while netting second in the 200 in 27.47 to pace the KnightRaiders’ 161-126 margin of victory over runner-up Martin County West.

MTGHECML garnered third place with 104, JWP was fourth at 51, while Loyola/Cleveland (45) and St. Clair (37) rounded out the six-team girls field.

Martin County West generated four individual titles and a pair of relay crowns to pace its runner-up girls showing.

Cora Olson struck gold in the open 200 (27.36) and the long jump (16-10) for the Mavericks, Brooke Anderson captured the 800-meter run (2:33.36) and Marissa Whitehead pocketed the 3,200-meter run championship (12:02.17).

Brooke Anderson and Marissa Whitehead also ran the leadoff and anchor legs, respectively, on both of MCW’s first-place 4×400 and 4×800 relay squads.

Brooke Anderson handed the baton to Jayda Rowen en route to Olivia Anderson, with Marissa Whitehead running the final leg to produce a winning time of 4:23.96 in the 4×4.

Brooke Anderson, Logan Kosbab, Caitlin Whitehead and Marissa Whitehead then exchanged handoffs to combine for a gold-medal time of 10:32.54 in the 4×8.

Olson also produced key points for MCW by placing second in the 400 (62.79) and triple jump (33-11), while teammate Makena Larson netted second in both the shot (34-2 1/2) and discus (96-9). Olivia Anderson and Alexis Brolsma added third-place showings in the 300 hurdles (53.9) and discus (88-0), respectively.

Renae Wallace proved a double-winner to pace the MTGHECML Jayhawks’ third-place team total. Wallace captured top honors in the high hurdles with a time of 16.71 and doubled her gold by clearing a first-place distance of 34-7 in the triple jump.

Rachel Schultz cleared 4-10 to win the high jump crown for the Jayhawks, while Lillian Maul, Alyssa Chloros, Amy Denn and Hannah Johanson traded handoffs to win the 4×200 relay in 1:54.38.

Johanson pocketed second place in the long jump (16-7), Denn placed third in the shot put (33-1 1/2), while Maul recorded a bronze-medal time of 13.38 in the open 100.

Sylvia Rodriguez earned a pair of second-place finishes in the 1,600 (5:52.7) and 3,200 (12:48.76) for the Jayhawks, while teammate Abby Calkins garnered second in the 300 hurdles (53.35) and third in the high hurdles (17.59).

In the boys’ competition, MCW sprinter Dawson Burkhardt produced a 1-2 finish in the open 200 and 100, respectively. Burkhardt sprinted to victory in the 200 in 23.47, while running an 11.43 in half the distance to claim silver.

Andrew Ringnell contributed a second-place showing in the high jump (5-8) and a third-place performance of 40-0 1/2 in the triple jump to the Mavericks’ scoring effort.

Josh Sletta delivered the Jayhawk boys’ only conference championship by leaping to a first-place mark of 19-9 in the long jump. Sletta also earned a silver medal in the triple jump at 40-2.

Angel Zamora and Jarly Godoy supplied third-place times for MTGHECML. Zamora covered the 400-meter dash in 53.79, while Godoy crossed the finish line in the 800 in 2:07.99.

Martin County West and Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther compete in the Section 2A, Sub-Section 6 Meet at 4 p.m. next Thursday in Wells.
