Fairmont baseball upends St. Peter

ST. PETER — Fairmont right-hander Sam Schwieger fired a one-hit complete-game gem to guide the Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the St. Peter Saints during Big South Conference baseball action Tuesday in St. Peter.

Schwieger allowed two unearned runs on only one hit in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game win. Schwieger struck out six and issued only one base-on-balls.

Tied at 2-all in the top of the sixth inning, Dylan Gerken delivered the pivotal hit for the Cardinals. Gerken smacked a two-run double to plate pinch-runners Nick Segar and Christian Engeman. Schwieger and Lance Becker had produced back-to-back hits to trigger Fairmont’s at-bat before Segar and Engeman were inserted onto the base paths.

Gerken later crossed the plate on Jordan Wolter’s sacrifice fly to cap the Cardinals’ tiebreaking at-bat.

Schwieger finished with two hits for Fairmont, while teammates Collin Steuber, Nate Kallenbach and Zac Ringnell added singles.

Brock Bushaw connected for an RBI double in the first inning to account for the Saints’ only hit on the game.

St. Peter starting pitcher Carter Hrdlicka allowed five runs — two earned — on seven hits, struck out one and walked three in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Fairmont (4-7) travels to Marshall on Thursday for a 5 p.m. game.

St. Peter shut out Fairmont in B-squad action, 3-0, Tuesday in St. Peter.

Tony Nuss delivered a double for the Cardinals (7-4), while Dalen Keltgen and Jeb Green handled the visitors’ pitching duties.

Keltgen allowed three runs — only one earned — on two hits, fanned four and walked two in five frames to take the loss. Green struck out one in one hitless and scoreless inning of relief.

St. Peter edged Fairmont, 7-6, during C-squad action Tuesday in St. Peter.

Tyson Geerdes, Zach Soelter and Dan Betts each singled and doubled for the Cardinals, while Joey Flohrs and Blake Buntjer each contributed a pair of singles.

Blue Earth Area 3, Worthington 2 (8 innings) — Joe Schavey hit a walkoff one-out RBI single to lift the Bucs over the Trojans after eight innings on Tuesday in Blue Earth.

Chris Sanders singled and scored the game-tying run on Jesus Quintero’s only hit of the game. Schavey’s single allowed Quintero the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kaylan Legred went 2-for-4 and Zach Schonrock went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Trevor Oppedal added a hit to the Bucs’ eight-hit performance.

Tucker Sorenson provided the Trojans with two doubles on 2-for-4 hitting and an RBI, while Easton Sauerbrei doubled.

Logan Jahnke pitched all eight innings, giving up two runs — one earned — on seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Sauerbrei and Sorenson each pitched two innings. Logan Huisman threw three innings to take the loss. Shawn Hurley pitched the final 1/3 of an inning for Worthington.

Worthington (8-3) plays at New Ulm on Thursday, while Blue Earth Area (4-5) hosts St. James at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 3, St. James Area 2 (10 innings) — Quintin Greier scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning as the Jaguars edged out the Saints on Tuesday in St. James.

Down 2-0, the Jaguars scored two runs in the seventh to extend the game. Zach Jahnz doubled twice in four at-bats and scored a run. Garrett Balcom had a hit and Carter Wille recorded an RBI single.

Brady Stevens hit an RBI double and RBI single for St. James. Max Svalland hit a double with a run scored, and Sawyer Carr singled and scored a run.

Ethan Hurn pitched the final two innings and gave up a hit with four strikeouts and a walk to earn the narrow victory. Jahnz gave up a hit, struck out three and walked three over five innings. Derek Shoen allowed two runs on three hits, struck out four and walked one in three innings of work.

Stevens gave up only two hits with two walks and a strikeout in six innings. Svalland threw one inning, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two batters and hitting one.

Kobe Mohwinkel gave up the final run on two hits while fanning two in the final three innings to take the loss.

Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 6, Martin County West 1 — The Bulldogs held the Mavericks to one run to pocket the Valley Conference victory on Tuesday in Welcome.

Spencer Keitkamp went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI for the Bulldogs. Alex Kjolstad also scored a run.

Colton Leiding had three hits and scored the Mavericks’ lone run in the fourth inning. Cam Dressen went 2-for-3, collected an RBI and swiped a base, while Wyatt Geistfeld recorded two hits with a stolen base.

Sam Eustice earned the win for the Bulldogs, giving up a run on eight hits while striking out five and hitting one batter. Kjolstad allowed one hit and struck out one in an inning on the mound.

Jesse Spear gave up four runs — three earned — on four hits, walked four, struck out six and hit two batters over four innings to record the loss for MCW.

Noah Ringnell pitched three innings and struck out two with three walks while giving up two runs — one earned — on a hit for MCW.
