Mavericks eliminate Huskies in 3AA hoops tilt

TRIMONT — Martin County West power forward Renae Eckmann produced a team-best 18 points to help power the No. 4-seeded Mavericks to a 58-48 playoff basketball triumph over the No. 5-seeded Jackson County Central Huskies on Saturday night in Trimont.

Martin County West (15-9) advances to face the No. 1-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers (24-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday night in a Section 3AA, South Sub-Section semifinal game in Windom. The Panthers eliminated No. 8-seeded Redwood Valley, 76-47.

Alaina Wolff scored a game-leading 22 points for the Huskies, who closed out the season with a 9-17 record.

Jayni Anderson contributed 13 points to Jackson County Central’s cause.

Eckmann connected on 6 of 10 shots from 2-point range and made 6 of 8 free throws to help produce her scoring total. Eckmann also distributed three assists and pulled down five rebounds.

Guard Hunter Wrightson connected on three 3-pointers to help pace her 11-point performance for the Mavericks, while center Sierra Williamson generated 10 points.

Sierra Williamson garnered eight rebounds for Martin County West, while teammate Maia Taylor neared double-double territory by scoring eight points and grabbing a team-best nine rebounds to complement distributing three assists.

Point guard Alyssa Williamson contributed nine points and pocketed three steals for the Mavericks, while teammate Karlee Thiesse chipped in five rebounds and three steals.

Martin County West made 18 of 40 shots from 2-point range for 45 percent, 3 of 13 attempts from behind the 3-point arc for 23 percent, and 13 of 23 at the free throw line for 56 percent.

The Mavericks built a 31-23 lead over the Huskies by halftime before outscoring their opponents by a 27-25 margin in the final 18 minutes.

In other Section 3AA, South Sub-Section action on Saturday, No. 2-seeded Pipestone Area coasted to a 69-40 quarterfinal victory over No. 7-seeded Windom Area. No. 3-seeded Minneota eliminated No. 6-seeded Luverne, 72-38.

Pipestone Area (24-1) faces Minneota (21-6) approximately 20 minutes following the completion of Thursday night’s 6 p.m. Section 3AA, South Sub-Section’s contest between Martin County West and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.
