Cardinals capture icy sweep of Eagles on road

WINDOM — Two overtime games, two Cardinal victories.

Fairmont Area forward Anna Nordquist converted defender Myah Lytle’s second assist of the game into the decisive goal with 4:30 remaining in overtime to propel the Cardinals to a 3-2 triumph over the Windom Area Eagles on Thursday in Windom.

Ironically, Fairmont Area converted the third goal of Taylor Nuss’ hattrick into a 4-3 overtime victory over Windom Area during the two Big South Conference teams’ season-opener on Nov. 22 at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

Trailing 2-1 with time winding down during the second period, Lytle threaded a pass to teammate Joni Becker for the equalizer with only 1:19 left.

Both Cardinal goaltender Sadie Sandersfeld and Eagle netminder Emily Steen, who each produced shutout opening frames, duplicated their respective performances during a scoreless third.

Abagail Turner delivered an unassisted goal at the 14:27 juncture of the middle segment to stake New Ulm to a 1-0 margin before Nuss converted Becker’s assist into the tying goal a little more than a minute later at the 13:23 mark.

Anna Volk tallied an unassisted goal to regain the lead for the hometown Eagles with 10:09 remaining in the second period.

Sandersfeld registered a game-best 34 saves to net the win for the Cardinals, while Steen turned away 21 of Fairmont Area’s shots.
