Prairie Centre skates to tourney win over Fairmont Area

BENSON – The Prairie Centre Area North Stars overcame a 38-33 shots-on-goal deficit and a Fairmont Area power-play goal to post a 5-2 victory over the Cardinals during the Morris/Benson Area Storm holiday boys hockey tournament on Thursday at the Benson Civic Center.

Senior forward Petr Erhart bookended Prairie Centre Area’s goal-scoring performance on the night. Erhart delivered the tournament game’s initial goal off an assist from Isaac Imdieke at the 6:15 juncture of the opening segment.

Junior defender Will Koetters then cashed in an unassisted goal at the 11:39 mark to extend the North Stars’ lead to 2-0 after one period.

Hudson Pung then converted Noah Fletcher’s pass into a goal at the 12:12 mark of the second frame.

Sam Mensing produced the Cardinals’ power-play goal at the 16:05 juncture of the middle segment to inch Fairmont Area within 3-1.

Tom Havnen trimmed the Cardinals’ deficit to 3-2 by opening the third period with a goal. Karson Legred and Bryan Karp provided the double-assist on Havnen’s goal 3:49 into the last segment.

Noah Fletcher and Erhart, however, produced back-to-back goals within a four-minute span to put Prairie Centre Area in the lead for good. Noah Fletcher found the net off an assist from Hunter Fletcher for a short-handed goal at the 10:22 mark. Erhart then cashed in Isaac Cebulla’s pass for his second goal of the night at the 13:50 mark.

North Stars goalie Jesson Gould stopped 36 of the Cardinals’ 38 shots to net the win. Fairmont Area netminder Colby Kuhl turned away 28 of 33 shots on net.

Fairmont Area (1-9) plays the Morris/Benson Area Storm at 7 p.m. tonight at the Benson Civic Center during the next round of the holiday tournament.
