Cardinals quiet Cyclones at BLC Tour

MANKATO — The Fairmont Cardinals boys basketball team coasted to a 59-40 triumph over the St. Clair Cyclones during the consolation championship game of the Pepsi/Bethany Lutheran College Holiday Tournament on Thursday night in Mankato.

Fairmont built a 26-18 halftime advantage before extending its final margin of victory by outscoring St. Clair 33-22 during the final 18 minutes of regulation.

Senior post player Walker Tordsen neared double-double territory by scoring a game-leading 21 points to complement eight rebounds for the Cardinals.

Junior guard Sam Schwieger delivered nine points, grabbed eight boards and distributed five assists to pack offensive punch to Fairmont’s winning ways.

Junior guard Nate Kallenbach generated nine points for the Cardinals, sophomore post player Lucas Denney contributed six points, while junior forward Brady Allen added five points and four rebounds.

Fairmont sank 7 of 13 free throws for 54 percent, hit 14 of 36 shots from 2-point range for 39 percent and blistered the nets on 8 of 20 shots from the behind the 3-point arc for 40 percent.

Carter Wakefield scored nine points to top St. Clair’s effort.

Fairmont (3-5) travels to St. James Area on Tuesday night for a Big South Conference game.

St. Clair (4-4) plays host to Sleepy Eye Public on Tuesday night.

Redwood Valley Tour

Lakeview 60, Martin County West 58 — The Lakers erased a four-point halftime deficit to rally for a narrow two-point victory over the Mavericks during the first round of the Redwood Valley Tournament on Thursday night in Redwood Falls.

Lakeview (4-2) advances to face host Redwood Valley (5-3) in tonight’s 8 p.m. tournament championship game back in Redwood Falls. The host Cardinals defeated Benson, 75-59.

Martin County West (0-8) plays Benson at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the tournament’s consolation championship contest.

Freshman forward Wyatt Geistfeld scored a game-best 18 points and pulled down five rebounds to help pace the Mavericks’ effort.

Logan Ebeling contributed 12 points and seven rebounds to MCW’s performance, while teammate Matt Holm produced 10 points and distributed three assists.

The Mavericks made 11 of 16 free throws for 69 percent, hit 3 of 11 from 3-point range for 27 percent and drilled 19 fo 37 shots from 2-point territory for 51 percent.

Jared Goepferich and Tate Varpness each tallied 13 points to top Lakeview’s victorious ways, while Coltan Varpness chipped in 10 points.

The Lakers made 8 of 14 free throws, 6 of 16 from 3-point territory and 17 of 42 from 2-point range.
