Warriors edge Broncos, 46-44

ARMSTRONG — The North Union Warriors basketball team edged the Belmond Broncos, 46-44, during Top of Iowa Conference action Tuesday night.

North Union (2-4) travels to Bishop Garrigan in Algona, Iowa, on Friday night.

Mavericks cage Eagles with win

TRIMONT — The Martin County West Mavericks girls basketball team scored 28 points in both halves for a 56-38 win over the Windom Eagles on Tuesday night.

Maia Taylor led the Mavericks with 13 points, along with six rebounds and three steals. Sierra Williamson chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, while Alyssa Williams had five steals with eight points and three assists.

Renae Eckmann contributed five assists and six rebounds to the Mavericks’ effort. Karlee Thiesse, who tallied four assists, and Madison Klima each pocketed three steals.

Overall, the Mavericks made 21 of 52 shots from the field for 40 percent and shot 70 percent from the free throw line.

Martin County West (5-0) plays at Madelia at 7:30 p.m. today.

8th-graders split wins with JCC

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals’ eighth-grade basketball teams split wins with Jackson County Central on Tuesday in Fairmont.

Fairmont’s ‘B’ team beat JCC, 26-12. Preston Vaughn led the Cardinals with 10 points. Gavin Rodning added eight points, while Leban Gulled scored four.

JCC beat the Cardinals’ ‘A’ team, 33-8. Vaughn put in five points.

Hanson named Trophy winner

SALEM, Va. — St. John’s senior linebacker Carter Hanson was named the 2016 Gagliardi Trophy winner on Wednesday. As the most outstanding NCAA Division III football player, Hanson recorded a team-high 74 tackles on the season and finished fifth in school history with 316 total tackles. Hanson, a Blue Earth Area High School graduate, is the third St. John’s player to win the award.
