Jaguars topple Blue Earth Area in overtime

BLUE EARTH — Last year, Hanna Geistfeld marked a career-high of 30 points for the Martin Luther Knights in a loss to Fairmont during nonconference basketball action.

One season later, Martin Luther combined with Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman to form the Jaguars and Geistfeld set a new career-high individual scoring mark.

The 6-foot senior forward scored 32 points to lead the Jaguars over the Blue Earth Area Bucs, 62-57, during non-league basketball action on Tuesday night in Blue Earth.

“I didn’t even know that,” Geistfeld said after the game in reference to her game-leading scoring performance.

Falling behind, 7-0, to the Bucs Geistfeld scored the Jaguars’ first point on a free throw before getting a putback on the offensive glass at the 9:23 juncture of the opening half.

“She got some big offensive rebounds,” Jaguars head coach Rick Uttech said about Geistfeld, who finished with 14 total boards for a double-double.

Geistfeld later pulled the Jaguars within two before junior guard Macy Quinn notched a bucket to tie the gam at 9.

Bucs sophomore forward sent the home team up by three with a traditional 3-point play. But Geistfeld got the Jaguars their first lead of the night with 4:23 remaining on two foul shots in a 1-and-1 situation.

“We did start out slow, there’s no doubt about that,” Uttech said. “We missed some easy baskets and free throws right away. Once we started making it, then we got fairly consistent.

The Jaguars went up by as many as eight in the half before the Bucs began to narrow the deficit. Junior forward Reegan Howard made good on an assist from junior center Lindsey Norman at the 1:35 mark for the team’s first points in four minutes. Howard then picket the Jaguars’ pockets with a steal that Lindsey Norman turned into a fastbreak layup.

Senior guard Samantha Barslou capped off the Bucs’ first-half scoring with two made free throws, but the team went into the break with a 22-18 deficit.

“She (Barslou) was real aggressive taking the ball to the hoop and shot her free throws really well,” Bucs head coach Al Cue said. “She’s also a good leader for us as far as getting in the different defenses. It was a nice night for her.”

The Bucs began the second half outscoring the Jaguars, 9-5, with Barslou adding two foul shots and a clutch 3-pointer off a feed from sophomore forward Caitlin Rorman. Junior guard Alissa Norman restored the Bucs’ lead with a putback before Uttech called for a timeout.

Quinn found senior center Kenlie Pytleski for a layup to tie the game at 29. The two teams tied nine times before Rorman made one of her foul shots as the Bucs entered double bonus territory with 3:34 to go in the game.

Rorman then added a quick layup for a three-point lead. The Bucs increased their advantage to five after Alissa Norman put in a quick basket on twin sister Lindsey Norman’s steal.

Brummond chipped away at the lead with one made charity toss, and Geistfeld tied the game at 54 with two shots with 58 seconds left.

With three seconds to go in regulation, the Bucs got the ball back on a Jaguars turnover Lindsey Norman threw the ball down the court to Rorman, who missed the shot to send the game into overtime.

The Jaguars struck first when Geistfeld threaded a pass to Pytleski for an easy layup. Pytleski added two more points at the free throw line for a 58-56 lead. The senior center then passed to Geistfeld for a shot.

“I think that Kenlie and I worked well together,” Geistfeld said.

Barslou drove to the lane and got fouled with 1:39 remaining in overtime, making one shot for a 60-57 deficit. The 5-7 senior finished with a team-leading 20 points in additin to four rebounds.

“We had trouble stopping Barslou,” Uttech said. “She got a lot of drives and layups through the lane, so she did a nice job of penetrating through the lane.

Pytleski added two more charity tosses to seal the Jaguars’ five-point win.

Lindsey Norman led the Bucs in steals with six and rebounds with nine in addition to 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting and two assists. Samantha Ripley added six points and eight rebounds.

“Overall, I’d say it was one of our better efforts this year,” Cue said. “We’re playing better each time out.”

Geistfeld added five assists in her double-double performance, while Pytleski scored 16 points, rejected four shots, recorded seven boards and doled out three assists.

Brummond led the Jaguars in steals with four and Quinn pocketed three as the duo totaled six points apiece.
