Bluejays shut out Cardinals in hockey clash

FAIRMONT — The Waseca Bluejays’ scoring started and ended with junior forward Andrew Weller as the team shut out the Fairmont Area Cardinals, 6-0, during Big South Conference boys hockey action on Thursday night.

Weller got the Bluejays’ first goal with assists from TJ Sommers and Simon Sommers at the 14:59 mark of the opening period. Six minutes later, senior forward Spencer Heitkamp edged in a score off of Brett Attenberger’s blocked attempt at the goal.

Simon Sommers angled in a shot with 3:45 left in the frame to send the Bluejays into the first intermission with a 3-0 advantage. Senior defender Chet Miller passed right to Simon Sommers, who managed to hit the left side of the net from the far right side of the goal post.

The Cardinals managed to keep the Bluejays from scoring for the first six minutes of the middle frame. Senior forward Nick Rolling broke away and swiped in a short shot at the 10:23 juncture to keep the Bluejays rolling.

Bluejays junior defender Ethan Barley tried to knock in another goal, but Cardinals goalie Colby Kuhl rejected the shot. Jackson Priebe came from the other side of the pipes to rebound the shot and score with 1:53 remaining in the period for the 5-0 lead.

Weller closed out the team’s scoring with his second and final score at the 10:51 mark of the final period. TJ Sommers flipped the puck to Weller, who smacked a quick shot between the pipes to start running time.

Andrew Weber picked up the shutout win, recording 15 saves.

“We’ve just got to keep working in practice, keep working our neutral-zone play, our defensive zone coverage and skate harder to pucks,” Cardinals head coach Kris Olson said. “You can’t win games when you get outshot like that.”

The Bluejays outshot the Cardinals, 55-15, in the game, including a 20-shot second period.

Colby Kuhl stopped 32 Bluejays’ shots over two periods.Tyson Geerdes, who tallied 14 saves, relieved Kuhl in the third period.
