Magic gymnasts beam by Cardinals

WELCOME — Martin County Area senior Bryanna Peterson already looked in mid-season form during the Magic’s second dual gymnastics meet of the schedule.

Peterson captured her second all-around crown in as many competitions by generating 36.375 points to power Martin County Area to a 133.45-129.975 Big South Conference triumph over the Luverne Cardinals on Tuesday night in Welcome.

Luverne senior Madison Schandelmeier, who netted runner-up all-around accolades with a total of 33.175 points, claimed top honors on the vault with an 8.9-scored performance to prevent Peterson from sweeping all four individual events.

Peterson landed her quarter, one-and-a-quarter vault for a second-place mark of 8.725 before dominating the field on the uneven parallel bars and floor exercise to complement the meet’s top balance beam mark.

Peterson executed a back giant into a blind change on the high bar before turning a front giant. The Magic’s top all-arounder then hit her counter-swing to the low bar before eventually planting a toe-front dismount for a first-place total of 9.55.

Peterson delivered her patented double-full during her middle tumbling sequence on the floor to glide to a winning score of 9.425. Peterson then outdueled MCA teammate Brielle Meade for first-place honors on the beam, 8.675-8.6.

Meade contributed a fourth-place all-around total of 32.8 points to the Magic’s winning ways. The MCA junior also delivered a fourth-place mark of 8.6 on the floor.

“We’re still working on putting more difficulty into our routines as the season progresses,” said Magic head coach LeeAnn Steen. “Our (uneven) bars looked better tonight, and our beam set is coming along nicely.”

MCA created distance on the judges’ scorecards by outdueling Luverne on the unevens, 32.025-30.375, and extended its margin with a 32.75-31.075 advantage on the beam.

“We used a different lineup tonight, and will likely continue to blend in our younger gymnasts with some of our experienced veterans as the season goes on,” said Steen.

Sophomore Maiya Dietz, eighth-grade phenom Sabrina Segar and up-and-coming eighth-grader Sady Ringnell displayed the Magic’s solid scoring depth by producing top-five finishes on the night.

Dietz pocketed second place to Peterson on the uneven bars with a 7.8-scored routine, shared third-place honors on the vault with Luverne’s Samantha Pierce with 8.575s, while chipping in a fifth-place total of 8.125 on the beam.

Segar generated a fourth-place score of 8.55 with her Tsuk vault for the Magic, while tying Luverne’s Meghan Witte for fourth on the unevens with 7.5s.

Sady Ringnell rounded out MCA’s top-five finishes by garnering fifth place on the floor exercise with an 8.3-scored performance.

Schandelmeier added a third-place showing on the unevens (7.7) and a fourth-place mark of 8.325 on the beam for Luverne.

Courtney Siebenahler and Shelbie Nath supplied totals of 33.15 and 31.075 to capture third and fifth places, respectively, for the Cardinals.

Martin County Area (1-1) travels to Waseca for another Big South dual meet on Thursday, Dec. 15.
