Cardinals hockey ices Trojans, 3-1

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Area Cardinals girls hockey team rallied around goalie Emily O’Connor to hold the Worthington Trojans to a single goal in the 3-1 Big South Conference win on Tuesday night at Martin County Arena.

“We held the shots to a minimum and that helped keep us in the game,” Cardinals head coach Ashley Olson said.

The Cardinals struck first with two scores in 40 seconds during the first period of the game. Trojans goalie Bailey Kruse blocked Cardinals sophomore forward Anna Nordquist’s shot. But senior forward Cori Emler was right there to get it past Kruse for the Cardinals’ first score at with 7:46 remaining in the period.

Thirty-eight seconds later, freshman forward Joni Becker passed to senior Myah Lytle for the open look near the blue line and a 2-0 score.

At one point, the Cardinals were short two peole due to interference and slashing penalties, but managed to keep the Trojans off the board. Ironically, during that point, seventh-grade defender Makenzie Householder almost nailed a goal, but Kruse stopped the shot.

The Cardinals ended up outshooting the Trojans, 23-8 during the first period.

“They were powering away with the shots. I just think we need to put more away,” Olson said.

With 4:48 to go in the middle frame, eighth-grader Kaylana Rosadakhom kept the Trojans from getting shut out. Rosadakhorn swiped a hard puck toward the goal, and O’Connor got the block. Unfortunately for O’Connor, the puck bounced off of her shoulder and into the goal for a 2-1 game.

A Cardinal eighth-grader answered, though, to restore the home team’s three-goal lead. After junior defender Alyssa Fetters’ shot was blocked, eighth-grader Tegan Roskop found the open net on the rebound for her first career varsity goal with one second left in the period.

Neither team could get in the scoring column during the third period, though Kya Nickel almost made it a one-goal game. The freshman forward broke away with the puck and down the ice around the five-minute mark. She tried for the mid-range swipe, but hit too hard and the puck went over the goal post.

The Cardinals held on to their lead and exited Martin County Arena with the win.
