Winona hockey outshoots Fairmont Area, 9-4

FAIRMONT — All Ty Mannor needed was a long weekend road trip to get his scoring touch back.

The Winona senior defenseman produced a game-best hat trick, while teammate Matt King netted a playmaker by doling out a game-high three assists to power the Winhawks to a 9-4 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Saturday at Martin County Arena.

“He (Mannor) has been a little snake-bit during our first two games of the season, but he’s picked it up last night (Friday) and today (Saturday),” said Winona head coach Fran Devitt.

Mannor netted two goals during the Winhawks’ 6-3 triumph over Worthington on Friday night before adding three more against Fairmont Area less than 24 hours later.

Cardinals starting goalie Colby Kuhl and Winhawks netminder Alex Benson each recorded shutouts through the nonconference game’s first 15 1/2 minutes before Tyler Head put the hometown lineup on the scoreboard first.

Wing Bryan Karp rushed the right wing, slashed in front of Benson and backhanded a shot off of the Winona goalie’s pads. Head alertly chipped in the rebound for a 1-0 lead with 1:38 remaining in the opening segment.

With time winding down, Aden Kovala and Justin Waldera set up one last march down the ice and combined for the equalizer. Waldera threaded a perfect crossing pass to Kovala, who blasted a left-to-right liner into the top shelf to knot the game at 1-all with a mere 3 seconds remaining.

Waldera teamed with Andre Russeau on back-to-back plays during a 14-second span in the second period to snap the tie in Winona’s direction.

Waldera punched the puck loose during a scrum before Russeau pocketed the carom. Russeau juked left and flipped home a low shot for a 2-1 lead at the 14:25 juncture.

Russeau then returned the favor by gliding a centering pass to Waldera for a two-goal lead only 14 ticks later.

Eighteen seconds later, Sam Welker and Tom Havnen worked a textbook 2-on-1 sequence to inch the Cardinals within one. Havnen rushed the left side before threading a crossing pass to Welker, who hammered home the assist.

Mannor, however, delivered back-to-back pivotal goals to regain the momentum for the Winhawks.

King spotted a breaking Mannor near the point and Mannor drilled a slapshot past Kuhl for a goal at the 13:25 juncture of the middle period.

The pair of Winhawks worked their connection two minutes later on the power-play against Cardinal relief goalie Tyson Geerdes, with Mannor quick-wristing a right-wing shot into the net off another King pass.

King closed out the second frame with a natural playmaker by uncorking the original shot off the pipe before teammate AJ MacLennan punched home the rebound for a 6-2 lead with 8:22 left in the middle period.

Head and the Cardinals did not throw in the proverbial towel, however, as the senior wing unleashed a net-finding slapshot from the point to open the third period. Kaylan Legred distributed the centering pass for an assist on Fairmont Area’s lone power-play chance with 9:54 to go.

Kovala, Jonas Trombetta and Mannor reeled off consecutive goals at the 8:48, 7:48 and 6:25 junctures, respectively, to create a 9-3 lead and running time.

Karson Legred cranked home a rising liner into the top right shelf off a double-assist from Welker and Matt Kotewa to cap the game’s scoring with 2:18 remaining.

Winona produced a 51-21 shots-on-goal edge over Fairmont Area, including a 22-10 margin in the final 17 minutes.

Benson made 17 saves to net the win for the Winhawks, Kuhl stopped 37 shots, while Geerdes made five saves in the middle segment.

Fairmont Area (0-3) travels to Le Sueur on Tuesday night to face St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson.

Winona (2-2) plays host to Rochester John Marshall on Thursday night.
