Bauer runs to district title, earns state bid

HOLSTEIN, Iowa – Three in a row.

North Union junior Riley Bauer defended his Iowa Class 1A, District 2 individual cross country crown by crossing the finish line first at Ridge View Golf Course in Holstein, Iowa, on Thursday.

The No. 4-ranked Bauer earned his third consecutive state cross country bid by covering the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 54.15 seconds. Bauer’s winning time easily outdistanced Boyer Valley senior Zach Ambrose’s runner-up time of 17:02.23.

Bauer, who captured the 2016 Iowa Class 1A 1,600-meter state crown and placed third in the state 3,200-meter race, competes in the state meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Bauer placed 65th at the 2015 state cross country competition.

Ambrose paced Boyer Valley to the District 2 boys team crown with 66 points, while Remsen St. Mary’s placed second with 106.

Braden Pierce and Noah Morphew posted 5K times of 19:50.22 and 19:59.26 to place 74th and 79th, respectively, for North Union.

In the girls’ district competition, North Union junior Skyler Morphew completed the 5K course in 25:20.85 to net 73rd place overall.

North Union junior Nicole Burgeson posted a time of 25:52.89 to pocket 79th place, while senior teammate Claudia Kinnander took 117th place with a time of 31:29.67.

OA-BCIG sophomore Madison Schiernbeck captured the District 2 individual girls championship by generating a time of 20:09.64, while West Sioux senior Hailey Pullman pocketed second place in a time of 20:20.0.

Maple Valley-Anthon Oto and St. Edmond of Fort Dodge each produced point totals of 64 to tie for the District 2 girls cross country team championship.
