New Ulm tennis team posts Big South win over Fairmont

FAIRMONT – Fairmont third singles netter Sydney Hainy rallied for a three-set victory to prevent the Cardinals from being shut out at the rackets of the New Ulm Eagles on Tuesday in Fairmont.

New Ulm swept the doubles bracket in straight sets to pace a 6-1 Big South Conference tennis triumph over Fairmont at the Cardinal Courts.

“I thought we did a better job in singles today,” said Cardinals’ mentor Eric Johnson, whose singles players garnered 34 games during the bracket’s four individual matches. “The girls took a step forward, and that’s what we’ve been looking for this season.”

Despite losing a 6-3 opening-set decision to Sara Guymon, Hainy registered an early service break in the second set and never looked back. Holding a 4-3 lead, Hainy produced a pivotal break to capture the second segment, 6-3, to force a decisive third set.

The Fairmont sophomore trailed 2-1 in the final frame before breaking back in Game 4. Hainy then closed out her 3-2 lead by drilling an untouched service ace to Guymon’s backhand side.

Hainy broke again and held serve, respectively, to grab a 5-2 margin in the third set before capturing a 6-2 victory to cap her comeback for the Cardinals’ lone point.

“Due to injuries and illnesses, we’ve had to mix things up and the girls have responded well. They’ve done a nice job accepting their roles,” said Johnson, whose lineup was missing Holly Petrowiak due to the flu and Chloe Graif, who has a foot injury.

New Ulm, however, made a clean sweep of the doubles bracket to grab a quick 3-0 lead on the team ledger.

Abbey Frauenholtz and Katia Ostermann served a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Makena Rodriguez and Briana Joseph at third doubles just a minute before Eagles’ teammates Meleah Reinhart and Jane Arnoldt exited the Cardinal Courts with back-to-back 6-0 set wins in hand against Morgan Cihoski and Emily O’Connor at the No. 1 position.

Breanna Widmer and Shelby Haseman then inched New Ulm within one of a team victory by downing Maggy Totzke and Bergen Senf, who’s battling a nagging ankle/foot injury, by a 6-4, 6-1 decision at second doubles.

Rose Dobie fended off Brittany Bass’ late comeback bid, 6-3, 6-4, at second singles, while New Ulm first singles netter Taylor Bolduan did likewise to Lauren Carlson, 6-1, 6-4. Bass rallied from a 5-1 second-set deficit, while Carlson kept within striking distance throughout the final frame.

Emma Maudal collected the Eagles’ final point by outlasting Claire Nemmers at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-2.

Fairmont (2-10) plays River Valley at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Springfield. New Ulm (2-4) plays host to Waseca at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
