Fairmont spikers pocket invite championship

SLEEPY EYE – Tournament champions.

Fairmont head coach Haley Loerts and the Cardinal volleyball lineup earned that moniker after compiling a 4-1 record at the Sleepy Eye Public Invitational on Saturday in Sleepy Eye.

Fairmont opened tournament action bracket action by splitting two games with Redwood Valley, 15-25 and 25-21.

Fairmont, however, rebounded with authority to post a 25-13, 25-18 second-round sweep over the Madelia Blackhawks before pounding out a 25-22, 25-21 third-round sweep over the host Sleepy Eye Public Indians.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s netted a 25-20 first-game victory over Fairmont during semifinal action before the Cardinals bounced back to capture Game 2 by a 25-18 decision. Fairmont outslugged the Knights, 15-11, in Game 3.

Fairmont avenged its first-round split by outdueling Redwood Valley in a three-game championship clash, 25-20, 18-25, 16-14.

Sophomore setter/spiker Bailee Swanson played a key role in engineering the Cardinals’ winning ways. Swanson distributed 57 set assists and drilled 21 kills in her dual role, while serving up 10 aces and making 19 digs on defense.

Middle hitter Courtney Williams topped Fairmont’s statistical charts by nailing 36 kills during the five-match span to go with doling out eight set assists and making 10 digs.

Taylor Crissinger produced eight kills from the frontline for Fairmont, while teammate Alli Lardy hammered eight kills and served up four aces.

Alexa Mosloski smacked six spike-winners for the champion Cardinals, Mallory Mosloski connected for five kills, while Sara Schellpeper chipped in two kills.

Ericka Kim pocketed 14 digs to help pace Fairmont’s defensive performance, while Mallory Gochanour supplied 12 digs. Mariah Gochanour added six digs, while setter Madison Hennager distributed a team-best 95 assists to go with two ace serves.

Fairmont (4-3) travels to Waseca tonight for a Big South Conference clash.

The Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars went 0-2-1 during volleyball action at the Sleepy Eye Public Invitational on Saturday in Sleepy Eye.

The Jaguars netted a tie by splitting a pair of games against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, 16-25, 25-16 in first-round play.

Mountain Lake Area edged the Jaguars, 25-17, 25-19, in second-round action before Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s posted a 25-18, 25-10 win over the Jaguars in the third round.

Hannah Johanson distributed 33 set assists during the three-match tournament span, while teammate Kenlie Pytleski drilled 17 kills to top the Jaguars.

Marissa Steinhaus contributed seven kills and 32 digs to the Jaguars’ effort, while Alexis Brummond produced 30 digs.

Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman (2-3-1) plays host to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday night in Northrop.
