Martins sweep Royals

RUTHTON – The Fairmont Martins hammered out a 15-3 victory over the Ruthton Royals during first-round First Nite/Gopher League amateur baseball playoff action on Friday night in Ruthton.

The Martins (16-5), which swept the best-of-3 series, plays host to an opponent to be determined in a 7:30 p.m. second-round series Wednesday at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

Right-hander Jay Ruen recorded five strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in seven innings pitched to earn the complete-game win for the Martins.

Christian Petschke slugged a two-run home run to help trigger Fairmont’s double-digit run production for the second straight postseason contest.

Levi Becker and Spencer Chirpich each supplied four hits, while Brooks Rohman collected two RBIs for the Martins.

Taylor Nawrocki generated one RBI on the strength of two hits, while Matt Lytle and Adam Schmidt each collected one RBI for Fairmont.
