Fairmont VFW wins, loses one in doubleheader against New Ulm Gold

NEW ULM – The Fairmont VFW Post 1222 baseball team went 1-1 against New Ulm Gold in a doubleheader Saturday at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

New Ulm Gold shut out Post 1222, 13-0, in five innings before the visitors rebounded with a 5-2 win to avoid the sweep.

Gold scored two runs in the first inning before scored five in the second in the first game. The home team then scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Lance Becker had the lone hit for Post 1222 in the shutout. He also took the loss, giving up seven runs – one earned – on seven hits, struck out one and walked one in two innings of work.

Nick Segar pitched the final two innings and allowed six runs – three earned – on six hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

Becker went 2-for-4 in the second game as Post 1222 took the 5-2 victory. Post 1222 scored four runs in the second and one in the fourth, while Gold’s first run came in the sixth inning.

Camren Saxton provided Post 1222 with two runs scored on 2-for-4 hitting.

Jacob Tennyson also had two hits for Post 1222 and scored a run. Brady Allen and Nate Kallenbach contributed a hit each in the win.

Collin Steuber recorded the victory, allowing no runs on four hits with four walks in four innings on the mound. Kallenbach gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one in three innings of relief.

Fairmont Post 1222 (12-3) plays Lake Crystal in the 2nd District, Southwest Sub-District Tournament at 5:30 p.m. today in St. James.
