FAIRMONT - Logyn Cone has found a new home on the ice at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

The Fairmont Area sophomore made the transition from wing to center during Thursday night's non-league hockey game and the move paid instant dividends.

Cone literally finished what she started by distributing an assist and scoring the Cardinals' first and final goals of a 6-4 triumph over the Marshall Tigers.

"That was Logyn's first game at center. After watching film at practice last night, we (coaching staff) decided to move her there," said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl. "I don't think she really liked the switch."

Until the opening three minutes of Thursday night's icy clash, that is.

Defender Jenna Klages and wing Myah Lytle did not allow the Tigers to clear their zone before Cone took a pass near the right point, skated in and flipped a wrister over Marshall goaltender Sierra Wagner's right shoulder for a 1-0 lead at the 14:31 mark.

"That (center) just seems to be a natural position for her (Cone)," said Kuhl.

Cone then stayed aggressive during the Cardinals' ensuing power play and delivered a perfect crossing pass through the crease to a breaking Brooke Lemon. Lemon knocked home the goal inside the left pipe to stake Fairmont Area to a 2-0 edge with 4:27 left.

Marshall, however, regrouped during the intermission and stepped onto the ice with a newfound focus during the second frame.

Lizzie Archbold powered home a right-wing rush off Alysia Rupp's assist on the stick to claw the Tigers' deficit in half only 1:13 into the middle segment.

Fairmont Area wing Taylor Nuss, who matched Cone's point production at three on the game, answered Archbold's goal in less than a minute to restore a two-goal lead. Nuss rebounded Jalyssa Wilson's initial blast that ricocheted off of Wagner's pads and chipped home the follow for a 3-1 margin at the 14:55 mark.

Courtney Williams later took a pass from Nuss along the left wing and lined a sizzling shot that Wagner deflected only to have Kelsy Junkermeier connect on the putback goal for a 4-1 edge with 10:54 left in the second period.

The Tigers, however, did not panic as the visitors converted a power-play chance to trigger three unanswered goals during the final 9 minutes to knot the game at 4-all.

Bailey Archbold unleashed a slapshot from the blue line that took an odd change of direction and skidded past Fairmont Area netminder Sadie Sandersfeld. Sara Antony delivered the assist to Archbold to trim the Cardinals' lead to 4-2 via the power-play goal.

Miranda Fischer then muscled her way to the net and hammered home a right-wing liner off a Teagan Wyffels feed to inch Marshall closer on the scoreboard at 4-3 only 30 seconds later at the 8:27 juncture.

Wyffels then slid the puck past Sandersfeld with only 4 seconds remaining in the middle segment to tie the game. Antony picked up an assist on the play.

"I thought our depth proved the difference tonight. We withstood what they threw at us, especially during the third," said Kuhl. "Sadie made a pivotal save on a 2-on-1 to keep them off the scoreboard."

Nuss and Klages combined to produce the eventual game-winning goal off the power play during the early stages of the third period. Klages fired a shot from the point that Wagner deflected only to have a hustling Nuss flip home the rebound for a 5-4 edge at the 14:42 mark.

Sandersfeld then made the most important of her 27 saves by stonewalling Marshall's tandem of Wyffels and Fischer off a mini-breakaway chance at the 5:25 juncture.

Cone then delivered an insurance goal by stuffing home the game's final goal off Kelsy Junkermeier's threaded crossing pass through the crease with 3 minutes remaining.

"Our defense played well tonight with Jenna (Klages) scoring a couple of points for us, and Courtney (Williams) collecting her first varsity point with an assist," said Kuhl.

Wagner recorded a game-high 38 saves for the Tigers.

Fairmont Area (1-1) plays host to Windom Area at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. Marshall (0-1) hits the road to Hutchinson tonight.
