BIRD ISLAND - Tanner Picht collected three hits, produced two RBIs and scored twice, while right-hander Jacob Torgerson fired a complete game to guide Morris American Legion Post 29 to a 7-4 first-round victory over Winnebago Post 82/Blue Earth Post 89 at the Division II state baseball tournament on Friday in Bird Island.
Winnebago/Blue Earth (17-4) faces Pine Island at 9:30 a.m. today in a consolation-bracket game in Bird Island.
Morris plays Taconite - a 4-0 opening-round winner over Pine Island - at 4 p.m. today in a state semifinal game.
Picht, who went 3-for-4 on the game, delivered a pivotal two-run double to trigger Morris' six-run outburst during the bottom of the second inning to erase a 3-0 deficit.
Tyler Henrichs followed Picht's two-run two-bagger with a two-run double of his own to help Morris grab a 6-3 edge on the scoreboard.
Andrew Rentz contributed two hits to Morris' winning ways, while Torgerson went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Torgerson allowed four runs - just two earned - on eight hits, struck out five and walked two in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory.
Brandyn Olsen started on the mound for WBE, giving up seven runs - six earned - on 10 hits, notched five strikeouts and issued five walks in going the six-inning distance to absorb the loss.
Carter Hanson went 2-for-4 with a run scored for WBE, while teammate Alex Stewart produced a two-run single during the top of the second inning.
Olsen, Seth Anderson, Christian Haugh, Luke Schavey and Dallas Barslou each contributed hits to WBE's offensive effort, with Haugh collecting one RBI.
