FAIRMONT - The Fairmont boys and girls track and field teams set six honor roll marks as the Cardinals swept their season-opening outdoor triangular meet over the St. Peter Saints and the Martin County West Mavericks on Thursday at Cardinal Track in Fairmont.

Fairmont sophomore Sierra Schultz reached new standards in the high hurdles and triple jump, while teammate Paige Bearson leaped to an honor roll distance in the long jump.

Schultz's 16.7-second finish in the 100-meter high hurdles claimed first place along with a place on the honor roll and her triple jump of 33 feet, 2 1/2 inches was good enough for second in the triple jump.

Bearson earned second-place honors in the long jump with her leap of 15-9 1/4.

Cardinal seniors Justin Barnes and Mark Fruechte each set new honor roll performances in the high jump and open 400, respectively, while the Fairmont boys 4x100 relay also claimed honor roll status.

Barnes soared over the competition with his 6-2 first-place high jump performance and Fruechte blistered the track in the open 400 with a 53-second first-place effort. The Cardinals' 4x100 relay team of Derek Edman, Zach Brown, Peter Erickson and Payton Schlomann completed the honor roll day for with a first-place time of 47 seconds.

"I thought the boys scored really strongly across the board. To have six honor roll performances in the first outdoor meet, that is really great," said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk.

Along with Schultz's first-place finish in the hurdles, the Fairmont girls grabbed four other titles in the 72-58.5 victory over St. Peter. The Maverick girls secured nine first-place finishes for 53.5 points and a third-place finish.

Fairmont eighth-grader Jenna Pavich scored the top finish in the 1,600-meter run, coming in with a time of 6:00.1.

Senior Emily Wegener started the Cardinal success in the field events, hurling the discus 92-7 for first place.

Junior Pauli Anderson sprinted past the field in the 200 for a 28.8-second first-place time.

Brooklyn Leichtnam completed the top finishes for Fairmont by clearing 7-6 in the pole vault.

"We really won the meet on the girls' side in the field events, which is what I was kind of hoping for," said Bonk. "Emily had a big win in the discus and Brooklyn vaulted well in the pole vault, but the depth in the field - even though we we didn't win many - was great."

Martin County West swept the girls' relays, opening the meet with a 4x800 victory. Sara Carlson, Noel Bjerken, Whitney Smith and Morgan Larson combined for the 10:34.6 winning time.

Hailey Holtz, Autumn Smith, Taryn Tumbleson and Haley Jensen then combined for a 4x200 win with a 1:52.1 finish.

In the 4x100 relay, Holtz, Jensen, Tumbleson and Libbie Lange combined to race to a 12.7 first-place time, while Lange, Tumbleson, Whitney Smith and Larson completed the sweep in the 4x400 with a 4:28 victory.

Jensen, Tumbleson, Lange, Morgan Larson and Whitney Smith each grabbed individual victories as well. Jensen motored to a 12.7-second win in the 100, while Tumbleson outjumped the field with a 16-2 1/2 long jump performance.

Lange then hurled the shot 32-9 3/4 for a first-place finish, before Morgan Larson and Whitney Smith could capture the 800 and 3,200 in 2:27.8 and 12:46.2, respectively.

In addition to the Fairmont boys' honor roll times, the Cardinals (105 points) also grabbed four first-place titles to down St. Peter (43) and Martin County West (37).

The 4x200 relay grabbed the Cardinals' first victory of the day on the track, with Thomas Willette, Joey Petersen, Brian Wilde and Payton Schlomann trading handoffs for a 1:39.3 time.

Senior Brandon Martin contributed a sweep in the throwing events, winning the shot with a throw of 39-4 1/2 and the disc in 119-5 1/2.

"I thought that the sweep in the throwing events was really exciting to see. They did a really great job," said Bonk.

Nathaniel Larson secured the final Fairmont first-place finish with a vault of 11-6 in the pole vault.

Like their counterparts, the Maverick boys bookended the meet with a pair of relay victories. Josh Bjerken, Matt Viesselman, Dylan Brockman and Walter Fuller blazed through the 4x800 competition for a 9:02.3 time and first-place finish.

Nick Holm, Wesley Cook, Brockman and Fuller teamed up for the final win of the day in the 4x400, coming in 3:45.1.

Brockman, Fuller and Viesselman also nabbed individual firsts for MCW, winning the 1,600, 800 and 3,200 races, respectively.

Fuller came in under the 5-minute mark in the 1,600 for the 4:54.3 win, while Brockman won the 800 in 2:13.2. Viesselman than helped the Mavericks to a pair of meet-ending wins, racing to an 11:02.9 victory in the 3,200.
