NEW ULM - Doubling up championships proved the theme of the South Central Conference wrestling meet on Saturday in New Ulm.

Jesse Alleven, Luke Schavey and Kysten Zierke each earned individual titles to power Blue Earth Area to the SCC Meet's team crown to complement the Bucs' undefeated dual-meet championship.

"One of our goals at the beginning of the year was to win both the regular-season and SCC tournament team championships," said Blue Earth Area mentor Randy Wirtjes, whose lineup dethroned 2012 SCC Meet champion St. James by a 184-170 margin on Saturday. "Our kids have put in a lot of work to accomplish both of those goals.

"Now, we need to keep it rolling going into the section tournaments."

While the Bucs were earning another piece of hardware for the school's already-stuffed wrestling trophy case, Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bull junior 152-pounder Joe Weber claimed his second individual conference gold medal in as many days.

Weber began running the two-day gauntlet by capturing the Valley Conference Meet's 152-pound crown by edging Class A, No. 8-ranked Chance Oftedahl of St. Clair/Mankato Loyola via a 5-4 decision on Friday.

Weber then achieved a wrestling rarity by edging St. James' Zack Gleiter, 8-7, to strike gold in the 152-pound weight class of the SCC Meet on Saturday.

Weber opened his SCC title run by producing a 19-2 technical fall over New Ulm's Sam Hoppe before besting St. Peter's Steven Pettis via an 8-2 decision.

"Until the last two days, I had never ever won a tournament championship of any kind before," said Weber, who holds the No. 8 spot in the Class AA state rankings.

Weber becomes only the third grappler in the two-year history of the Red Bulls' program to capture back-to-back conference crowns. Trevor Schultz and Bryan Andrews each pocketed SCC and Valley conference gold medals over a two-day period last season.

Schultz, who holds the No. 1 spot in the Class AA 106-pound rankings, and No. 3-ranked heavyweight Colton Hines joined Weber atop the post-meet podium for the Red Bulls. The talented trio topped FHS/MCW's fourth-place SCC team total of 144 1/2 points.

Schultz, who placed second at 106 during Friday's Valley Conference Meet in St. Clair, pinned his way to the 113-pound SCC finals. Schultz downed New Ulm's Tanner Stark in 1:09 before pressing Blue Earth Area opponent Camden Bowers' shoulders to the canvas in 3:28. The Red Bull senior then converted a second-period reversal into a 2-1 victory over St. Peter's Chris Pettis in the championship match.

At the other end of the scale, Hines - who took second during Friday's Valley Conference Meet - duplicated Schultz's method in reaching the SCC's 285-pound finals.

The Red Bull senior heavyweight earned the slap of the mat in 3:24 over New Ulm's Andy Bregel before pinning St. Peter's Travis Brock in 3:24.

Hines then squared off against Class A, No. 8-ranked Martin Granados of Blue Earth Area in the heavyweight gold-medal round. Granados also pinned his way to the finals, downing Waseca's Sam Sierra in 1:39 before posting a fall in 2:27 over Class A, No. 5-ranked Victor Torres of St. James.

In the clash of heavyweight titans, Hines recorded a pair of takedowns to build a 4-1 first-period lead over Granados. Hines netted one takedown, while Granados generated two escapes in the second frame to keep the differential at three points.

The FHS/MCW 285-pounder then produced two takedowns to Granados' two escapes in the third period to claim the 10-5 victory.

Granados' silver medal capped Blue Earth Area's four runner-up performances, while Alleven delivered the first of the Bucs' three gold-medal efforts.

Alleven opened the 138-pound bracket by generating a 13-0 major decision over the Red Bulls' Harley Luhmann before pinning St. James' Mark Alvarado in 1:30.

Alleven then squared off against Waseca's Tristan Hoy in the gold-medal match. The Buc senior notched a first-period takedown and a second-period escape to build a 3-0 lead over Hoy. Hoy, however, rallied with a third-period escape and takedown to knot the score at 3-all. Alleven countered by earning a reversal with only 3 seconds left to claim the 5-3 win and a gold medal.

Meanwhile, Schavey built an early 6-0 lead over St. James' Kody Curry to fuel an eventual 8-3 victory during the 145-pound championship match.

The Blue Earth Area sophomore standout posted an 11-3 major decision over the Red Bulls' Tanner Lange before downing New Ulm's Austin Brandes via a 9-5 victory to reach the finals.

Schavey actually recorded the only takedown of his match with Curry, matched his St. James with second-period reversals and earned two near-fall points in the third frame.

The Class A, No. 4-ranked Zierke spent less than 3 minutes on the canvas in earning the 195-pound championship.

The Blue Earth Area junior standout pinned St. James' Chris Johnson in 52 seconds, downed New Ulm's Lorenzo Hernandez in 46 seconds and earned a fall in 41 seconds over the Red Bulls' Kory Brown in the finals.

Zach Buseman (106), Mike Ankeny (132) and Class A, No. 5-ranked 160-pounder Carter Hanson joined Granados as runners-up for the team champion Bucs, while Elijah Gronewold (126) and Luis Figueroa (220) joined Brown as silver medalists for the Red Bulls.

Angel Zamarripa (106) and Class A, No. 5-ranked 126-pounder Richard Soto won SCC titles for team runner-up St. James; Shaun Timmerman (120), Kyle Bosacker (160) and Class AA, No. 8-ranked 170-pounder Dylan Connor (182) struck gold for third-place St. Peter; Class AA, No. 4-ranked 170-pounder Zach Gehloff and No. 8-ranked 220-pounder Jacob Claybaugh pocketed first-place finishes for sixth-place Waseca; while Luke Cihak won the 132-pound crown for fifth-place New Ulm.

Fairmont/Martin County West, the No. 4 seed in the Section 3AA, South Sub-Section, faces No. 5-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Adrian.

Blue Earth Area will likely earn the No. 2 seed in the Section 2A Team Meet and play host to the No. 7 seed at 7 p.m. Thursday night in Blue Earth.
