BEA claims first at Red Bull Invite

SHERBURN - The Blue Earth Area Bucs claimed six second-place, three third-place and two fourth-place finishes to score the team victory with 161.5 points, upsetting the Class A, No. 8-ranked Minneota Vikings, who finished third (141) at the Red Bull Invite on Saturday in Sherburn.

Class AA, No. 1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz, Class AA, No. 3-ranked 285-pounder Colton Hines, Elijah Gronewold and Luis Figueroa all took home first-place finishes to lead the Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls to a fifth-place team finish with 114.5 points.

Schultz took the championship at 106, defeating the Class A No. 4-ranked 106-pound Brock Buysse from Minneota in a 9-4 decision. In his opening rounds, Schultz beat Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther's Cole Pietsch, pinning him 54 seconds into the opening round.

In the third round Schultz then earned a tech fall over Pipestone's Garrett Ploeger, winning in 1:12.

Gronewold then pulled off an upset on the way to his first-place run at 126, pinning Blue Earth Area's Jordan Stelter in the championship with 45 seconds remaining.

The sophomore pinned Pipestone's Jacoby Hunt at 2:24 in the opening round before facing off against Class A, No. 7-ranked 126-pound Bryce Bruner from Minneota. Gronewold pinned the Trojan with 22 seconds remaining in the match to advance into the final.

Stelter pinned the Rebels' Shawn Redman at 5:13 in the first round and then pinned the Jayhawks' Issac Pfeffer at 1:21 in the second-round match to reach the finals for a second-place finish.

Figueroa defeated Worthington's Peter Abraham in the 220-pound bracket's championship, winning the 3-1 decision to claim first place.

In the opening round of the 220-pound bracket, Figueroa won a 10-6 decision over the Trojans' Ty Veen. The Red Bull then advanced to face off against the Bucs' Micah Twedt, who received a first-round bye.

Figueroa outlasted Twedt, earning the 11-4 decision to reach the championship.

Twedt went on to pin the Rebels' William Borkenhagen at 3:28 in the second round of the consolation bracket. Twedt finished fourth, losing a 2-1 decision to the Arrows' Blake Wolters in the third-place match.

Hines completed the Red Bulls' championship-winning ways, pinning the Bucs' Class A, No. 9-ranked 285-pound Martin Granados just 1:15 into the championship match.

Both wrestlers earned opening round byes before advancing to the championship with second-round wins. Hines pinned Jared Nygaard from Pipestone at 2:31, while Granados won by injury default over Doug VanKeulen from Minneota.

Class A, No. 1-ranked 160-pound Adam Cooling took home the 160-pound bracket first-place finish, defeating Class A, No. 5-ranked Carter Hanson from Blue Earth Area in a 13-5 major decision.

Cooling won a 21-8 major decision over Allan Hachmann from Pipestone in the first round before claiming a 22-6 technical fall win over Minneota's Nathan Bueltel in the second round.

Hanson pinned the Rebels' Corey Ehlert in 46 seconds in the first round before beating the Trojans' Zach Kempema in a technical fall at 3:37 in the second round.

Jon Whitney also claimed a first-place finish for the Jayhawks, beating the Bucs' Luke Schavey in a 5-3 decision in the 145-pound championship.

Whitney shut out Matt Harpestad from USC 5-0 in the opening round, and then downed Minneota's Nicholas Esping 6-3 in the second round.

Schavey also earned a shut out in his first-round match, winning the 4-0 decision over the Red Bulls' Tanner Lange. Schavey then outlasted Walker Kor from Pipestone, earning the 10-8 win in the second round.

The Arrows' Class A, No. 8-ranked 145-pound Brady Bos hung on to defeat the Red Bulls' Class AA, No. 10-ranked 152-pound Joe Weber in a 2-1 decision in the 152-pound championship on Saturday.

Weber earned the 8-1 win over the Vikings' Justin VanKeulen in the first round and then outlasted the Bucs' David Franta in the second round for a 3-2 win.

Bos pinned the Jayhawks' Jesus Lopez at 2:19 in his first-round match before pinning the Vikings' Grant Abraham at 3:19 in the second round.

Franta went on to claim third-place honors, pinning Lopez at 1:52 in the second round of the consolation bracket before pinning Abraham at 3:33 in the third-place match.

Blue Earth Area's Gus Phillips claimed a second-place finish, winning his first two matches in the 170-pound bracket before losing 8-3 to the Vikings' Class A, No. 6-ranked 170-pound Issac Josephson in the championship.

Phillips pinned the Red Bulls' Phillip Bowie at 1:19 in the first round, and followed that up with a 10-2 major decision win over the Arrows' Will Smith in the second round.

Class A, No. 6-ranked Colten Carlson from USC pinned the Bucs' Chris Ramos at 4:47 in the championship to claim the 182-pound first-place finish.

Ramos earned a first-round bye and then pinned Minneota's Trent Esping at 1:07 in the second round to reach the final for a second-place finish.

Worthington's Carson Hagen earned the 3-1 victory over the Red Bulls' Kory Brown in the championship of the 195-pound bracket.

Brown took a first-round bye, but defeated the Rebels' Logan Sonnek 7-2 in the second round to reach the championship for a second-place finish.

Camden Bowers and Alec Huber helped finish off the Bucs' first-place team finish, both claiming third-place in their brackets.

Bowers lost to USC's Brett Byrne in the opening round of the 113-pound bracket, falling at 1:59 before coming back for three victories, including a pin of Worthington's Hser Moo Pwae at 1:35 to claim third-place honors.

In the first round of the consolation Bowers pinned the Red Bulls' Chris Ettesvold at 1:25 before advancing and defeating the Vikings' Eric Hauswedell in a 4-2 decision to reach the third-place match.

Huber won his first-round match, defeating the Trojans' Ben Johnson at 1:32 before falling to Class A, No. 4-ranked 132-pound Dylan Herman from USC at 1:33 in the second round.

Huber rebounded, pinning the Jayhawks' Justin Gifferson at 5:00 in the second round of the consolation bracket. The Buc then completed his third-place effort by pinning the Arrows' Class A, No. 10-ranked 132-pound Cole Nordmeyer at 5:00 in the the third-place match.

Herman went on to defeat the Class A, No. 7-ranked 132-pound Alec Engler from Minneota in a 2-1 decision to claim first-place.

Class A, No. 5-ranked 138-pounder Derek Herman from USC was upset in the 138-pound bracket, losing a 6-4 decision to the Vikings' Cole Hennen in the championship.

Class AA, No. 2-ranked 120-pound Anthony Luft from Worthington took home first place in the 120-pound bracket, beating Landyn VanOverbake from Minneota 9-2 in the final.

Class A, No. 3-ranked 106-pound Domonic Alger took home third-place honors after losing to Buysse in the second round of the 106-pound bracket.

Alger defeated the Arrows' Ploeger in a 7-2 decision for third place.

Fairmont/Martin County West and Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther travel to St. Clair at 2 p.m. on Friday for the Valley Conference meet.

Blue Earth Area hosts United South Central in a nonconference dual meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Blue Earth.
