FAIRMONT - The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls wrestling team recorded 19 match victories, including nine pins to earn a pair of dual meet victories - 66-10 and 42-34 - over the St. Clair Cyclones and Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Jayhawks on Friday night in Fairmont.

Luis Figueroa stepped to the mat for the deciding match in the second dual of the night against the Jayhawks. With the Red Bulls trailing 34-30, Figueroa needed a win at 220 to give his team the victory.

With a quick two-point takedown Figueroa got on the scoreboard first against the Jayhawks' Derek Firchau.

It took just just 1:12 for Figueroa to press Firchau's shoulders to the mat, giving the Red Bulls a 36-34 lead going into the final match.

Class AA No. 3-ranked 285-pounder Colton Hines took a forfeit at 285 for both the individual match and team meet victories.

"It is nice to get back to the part of our schedule where we can get some wins. When you go up against the Blue Earth Area and St. James' of the world you take your lumps," said Fairmont/Martin County West head coach Jake Tietje.

After the Red Bulls jumped out to a 12-0 lead thanks to back-to-back pins from Collin Steuber at 106 and Class AA No. 1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz in the 113-pound match, the Jayhawks were able to cut the lead in half with a win at 120.

Red Bull freshman Chris Ettesvold struck first in the 120 match against Jerimiah Colon, taking him down for a quick two points before nearly pinning him for three back points in the opening period.

In a hard fought second period, Colon managed an escape in the final moments, carrying momentum into the final frame.

Colon quickly reversed out of the down position to start the third period and pinned Ettesvold 35 seconds in to take the victory.

Elijah Gronewold took back the momentum for the Red Bulls, pinning Issac Pfeffer at 4:18 in the 126-pound match to make it 18-6.

"Elijah's pin for us was a huge one. We thought that he was capable getting a win for us, but that was a huge pin. We also had some other guys, like Bowie and Bulfer who may not have gotten the win, but shaved some points away to keep them (Jayhawks) from scoring more team points," said Tietje.

The Jayhawks took the next three match victories to tie the meet at 18-18 midway through the contest.

Justin Gifferson started a win streak for the Jayhawks, delivering a 12-5 decision over Levi Bulfer at 132, before Class A No. 8-ranked 126-pounder Bryon Forstner pinned Harley Luhmann at 2:50 in the 138-pound match.

Forstner jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the opening period over Luhmann. An escape from the down start position turned into a take down to start the second period for Forstner, and from there he rotated over Luhmann and pressed his shoulders to the mat for the victory.

Jon Whitney finished off the Jayhawks win streak with a 4-2 decision over Tanner Lange at 145.

The Class AA No. 9-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber was able to put a stop to the Jayhawk momentum in the 152 match, pinning Jesus Lopez at 3:37 to make it 24-18.

Weber fought hard to keep Lopez in the circle, racking up a 14-5 lead before he was able to pin for the win with 23 seconds remaining in the second period.

"Joe had a great night tonight for us. He got that pin when we needed him to and in his first match we knew that Oftedahl was one of their better guys. We thought that he'd have a chance for a major decison win, but that was a tough win for him," said Tietje.

Stevie Tierney pulled out a 16-6 major decision win for the Jayhawks over Phillip Bowie at 160 before Class A No. 1-ranked Adam Cooling won by forfeit at 170 to give the Jayhawks their second lead of the meet at 28-24.

Jake Denn was able to extend their lead, pinning Nathan Gillis at 1:28 in the 182-pound match making it 34-24.

Kory Brown was the recipient of a forfeit win for the Red Bulls at 195 to make it 34-30 for the Jayhawks as the 220 match stepped to the mat.

In the earlier dual against St. Clair, the Red Bulls claimed 12 wins, including four pins to take the 66-10 win.

Collin Steuber claimed his first of two wins on the night with a pin of Dylan Ramussen at 106 in 4:56.

Gronewold scored a pair of back points in the overtime period of his 126 match against Bryce Flowers to take the 3-1 win to help the Red Bulls take a 21-0 lead.

Weber claimed the first of his two victories on the night with a 9-2 decision over Chance Oftedahl at 160.

Nathan Gillis, Brown and Figueroa claimed three-straight pins to close out the 66-10 win.

Ettesvold, Conner Malo, Bulfer, Luhmann, Lange and Mark Washa each won by forfeit for the Red Bulls in the meet.

Fairmont/Martin County West hosts Maple River and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in a triangular meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Fairmont.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther wrestles at the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Invite today.
