M.C. Area beams by St. James

ST. JAMES - Martin County Area displayed a balanced scoring effort behind its talent-laden lineup to post a 129.475-101.0 South Central Conference gymnastics dual-meet victory over the St. James Saints on Thursday night in St. James.

Rebecca Steen generated 34.075 points to capture the all-around crown in topping the visiting Magic's winning ways. Steen claimed top honors on the floor exercise with the only score in the 9-point range by meriting a 9.125 from the judges.

Martin County Area's junior co-captain also garnered first-place accolades on the balance beam with an 8.725, while claiming runner-up honors to teammate Martha Olson on the vault with an 8.8. Steen placed third on the uneven parallel bars with a 7.425 to round out her overall point total.

Olson planted her Tsukahara to win the vault competition with a 9.225, while teammates Sydney Leichtnam and Michaela Twitchell claimed the No. 4 and No. 5 spots off of the vault table with an 8.375 and an 8.325, respectively.

Andrea Thate produced an individual victory for the Magic on the unevens, chalking up a 7.9 to fend off St. James' Erin Hurley (7.85). Hurley claimed second place in the all-around competition with a 32.225 and notched third on the vault with an 8.6.

Lexy Ringnell and Sydney Leichtnam claimed fourth and fifth place on the unevens with a 7.325 and a 7.25, respectively, for Martin County Area.

Brooklyn Leichtnam delivered a second-place score of 8.35 on the balance beam for the Magic, while teammates Maggie Bachenberg and Jenna Steele nailed down the fourth and fifth spots with a 7.175 and a 6.875, respectively. Hurley placed third on the beam for the Saints with a 7.5.

Olson and Hurley dueled for second-place honors on the floor behind Steen, with Olson netting an 8.3 and Hurley an 8.275.

Bachenberg and Ringnell shared fourth place on the floor with a pair of 8.15s, while Magic teammate Kersten Shantz collected fifth with a 7.475.

Martin County Area (6-0, 3-0 SCC) competes in the Sweetheart Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday in Jackson.
