FAIRMONT - Funeral service for Elsa M. Suter, 97, of Fairmont will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont with interment in the Welcome City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Elsa passed away on Friday afternoon, Dec. 7, 2012, at the Lutz Wing of Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.
Elsa Margaret (Mathiason) Suter was born on March 6, 1915, in Story City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Sam and Agnes (Dinsmore) Mathiason. She attended country school in Fraser Township, Martin County, Minn.
On September 1, 1935, Elsa was united in marriage to Herbert Suter at the Methodist Church in Fairmont. The couple resided in Fraser Township before moving to East Chain and then a farm near Fairmont until 1954 when they moved to a farm near Guckeen. In 1971, Elsa and Herbert moved back to Fairmont. They raised 10 children and shared 50 years together before Herbert passed away in 1985.
Elsa worked as a cook at The Western Caf in Fairmont as well as many other area restaurants. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Fairmont as well as the Home Extension Club. Years ago she was a member of the card club and was a 4-H leader. During her free time, Elsa enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crocheting, and making sock monkeys for her grandchildren. She especially loved the time that she spent with family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory include her children, Gail (Carol) Suter of Sherburn, Beverly (John) Borntrager of Trimont, Roger (Sandy) Suter of Brooklyn Park, Maralyn (Gary) Krumwiede of Madelia, Karalyn (Darrell) Furland of Fairmont, Joyce (Jerry) Simon of Fairmont, Evelyn (Chuck) Rudolph of East Chain, Sylvia (Jim) Pytleski of East Chain, Peggy (Chuck) Haugen of Granada, and Bob (Linda) Suter of Rochester; 29 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great grandchildren; brothers, Jim Mathiason of Granada, and Ron (Eileen) Mathiason of Oregon; step-sister, Marie Jose of Fairmont; sisters-in-law, Kathy Mathiason of Granada, and LouJean Mathiason of Farmington; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Sam and Agnes Mathiason, Elsa was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Suter; and many brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
