MARSHALL - The Marshall Tigers girls hockey team scored two goals in the final 3 minutes and 34 seconds to sneak past Fairmont 5-4, in a nonconference game at Marshall on Thursday.

With the game tied 2-2 after two periods, Marshall struck first in the third when forward Jessica Blanchard sent a pass from Hanna Peterson and Mikenna Radke in between the pipes to take the 3-2 lead at 6:26 in the period.

Cardinals defender Tieryn Arens quickly tied the game with a pass from Brooke Lemon just eight seconds later.

Arens then gave the Fairmont squad its first lead of the young season with an unassisted goal at 9:26.

With under four minutes to play, the Tigers' Peterson knotted the game up at 4-4 with the help of an assist from Sara Anthony.

The back-and-forth game almost went to overtime, but with 1:54 left, Marshall's Megan Vogl sealed the 5-4 victory, scoring her second goal, with an assist from Anthony.

Despite a scoreless opening period, both teams compensated for it, scoring all nine goals of the game in the final two periods.

Marshall started off the scoring in the second. Just 1:29 into the period forward Miranda Fischer slid an assist from Vogl and Radke over the crease and into the net to take the 1-0 lead.

Vogl then notched her first of the game, on an assist from Bailey Archbold at the five-minute mark of the second.

The Cardinals got on the board shortly after when eighth-grader Taylor Nuss scored an unassisted goal at 7:58 to make it 2-1.

Not wanting to go into the locker room trailing, Jalyssa Wilson scored with an assist from Lemon and Myah Lytle with 1:43 remaining in the second period.

Fairmont sophomore goaltender Miranda O'Connor stopped 19 of Marshall's 24 shots on net.

Marshall's netminder, freshman Morgan Morrill saved 26 of Fairmont's 30 shots on goal.

Fairmont (0-2) will continue its road trip by traveling to Luverne for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, Nov. 27, for a nonconference game.
