FAIRMONT - Santa Claus is coming to town, arriving from the North Pole on Friday to visit with local children and participate in Fairmont's annual Glows parade.

In addition to Old St. Nick, organizers are expecting 70-plus units in the parade. There is still time to sign up as a participant, by calling Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce at (507) 235-5547.

"Thousands of people watch the parade," said Chamber president Bob Wallace. "... It starts down at Ward Park and goes all the way to Lincoln."

The parade begins at 6 p.m., with the floats atwinkle in the twilight hour, setting the mood for the coming holiday season.

"What's really neat I think about our parade is how they have all the floats decorated with the lights," Wallace said.

The festivities begin on Friday with Santa's arrival at 4:05 p.m. at Fairmont Airport. The public is invited and reminded to bring cameras.

Meals will be dished up at local churches along the parade route throughout the dinner hour, with soup and sandwiches from 5-7 p.m. at First Congregational Church; chili and oyster stew from 5-8 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church; and turkey melt sandwiches at St. John's UCC before and after the parade, served by Martin County Humane Society. Also available will be Gran D's Popcorn on the corner of Downtown Plaza and Third Street.

Attendees are asked to think not only about their own dinner, but others who are less fortunate. Heaven's Table will collect donations for the food shelf during the parade.

Another holiday event the Chamber is sponsoring with Fairmont Public Utilities is the residential/commercial lighting contest. Call the Chamber by Nov. 30 to enter or nominate an entry for the contest. Judging will take place the week of Dec. 10.

"People really enjoy looking around, driving around town to look at the lights," Wallace said.

Also taking place is the festivals and events auction. Bidding ends 10 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds are used to help other entities bring activities to Fairmont.
